Just got my 24x40x12 steel shop finished and my electrician is coming tomorrow to wire. I was curious on a few things if guys could please help. I'm doing 4ft lights and do you guys having them running with the beams, or across the beams making a CROSS shape? Also, should I put them at the 12ft height or at the ceiling height which ranges from 12 up to 16 ft

Finally on the plugs, should I just put them about eye level every 10 ft on the beams?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge in this area. I'm trying to read this site as much as I can.

Thanks,
Clint

with 12-16' height, you really need to look at general lights, with some lower ones over work areas or shop space.

If you anticipate a lift, then plan around it. We have an awesome LED fixture that is directly above the lift at school, and it does NOTHING when a car is in the air. One is over the hood and the other over the back glass of most cars/trucks.

Unless there is a reason to mount them one way or another on your beams, I would go for placement of the lamp over how it attaches.

My outlets are at 50 inches (to clear a full sheet of OSB/drywall/steel), with two duplex outlets ever 6' around the shop. Each wall (north, south..) is on it's own GFCI and then to it's own circuit. I have 240 volt outlets under each window (in case of a window unit down the road) and a couple of 240 volt outlets for the welder and compressor.

best of luck

Clint,
On the orientation of the lights, there are a couple of things to consider. It probably wont make much difference either way.
What obstacles are there going to be? Wall reflectance is important to a shadow free space, so it would be best if the lights were oriented lengthwise against walls that are more free from obstacles. Also, consider what type of cabinets, if any, will be installed. No sense lighting the tops of cabinets.
If none of the above is applicable, then I would orient them so that they are perpendicular to the garage door. That way, you wont be looking at the 4' lengths of light when you're pulling in the car.

Regarding wall outlets, have your guy install a USB receptacle somewhere. That way you can charge your phone, tablet, etc, without having to scrounge around for a charger.
Good luck

Well you can put your outlets at any height you want but most folks put them at a "counter top" height or at a point here the cabinets or shelving won't block their access. The ceiling lights...?....picture would really help. Do you have a 24' ladder to change lamps? There is a distant concern. Maybe your electrician can offer a suggestion or a pro/con thought on this. Maybe if done one way rather than another, you could save a fair amount of material. Talk to him/her about it.
