I just built a 40x60 shop with a 13' ceiling. What type of lights and how many do you recommend? I was thinking 3 rows of four 8' flourescents (12 total). Am I close?
Thanks,

If you want just enough light to see to get around then that's enough. If you want good working light levels then you need almost 22 fixtures if you're talking four standard 4' T8 lamps in a 8' fixture.

Well I have 17 4 bulb T8's in my 30 x 48 shop. Its very bright and if I were younger I could get away with a lot less. My target was 100 candle power per foot which is a very high end lighting solution for an auto repair shop. I would think 24 fixtures would be a good lighting.

I'd say that's correct - I've got 4 rows of 5 lights in my 38 x 60, with 10' ceilings, four standard 4' T8 lamps in a 8' fixture.

I was actually thinking 12 - 8' bulb fixtures. Is one better than another?

I've got 7, 4' 2 bulb fixtures in my 20x20x8 for a total of 14 bulbs. I have a much lower ceiling and your space is 6x the size... you will probably regret not adding more. I started with 4, and it was a hassle having to go back and add more later.

I am building a 28x40 three bay garage, 12.5 height. I was thinking five 8 footers in each bay for a total of 15. I was going to wire the 2nd and 4th in each bay on a different switch to have some options of what to turn on.
