Lights yet again

Ok I am getting really close to switching over my lights in my shop. But the more I look and the more I research the more I get confused lol. My problem is I don't want too much nor to little light. My shop is is 21'x27' with seven foot ceilings. It's what I have to work with. What do you gurus recommend? I would like them tight to the ceiling.

This will be used as a metal shop.

P.s. the lithonia calculator says 4 of these http://www.acuitybrandslighting.com/Library/LL/documents/SpecSheets/C.pdf would be good. 48 inches long. What do you all think?

Your shop layout should play a part in your lighting layout. For instance, you don't want all the light behind you as you stand at a machine. At 7' your lights will be low. So maybe place the lights closer to the walls depending. And get some tube protectors for those lamps. I know I'd end up breaking one at that height.

I retired from Shell Oil Refinery. Worked in the machine shop. The main shop lights were about 20-25' up. So, we took conduit put a bend in it, slipped it over a pipe bracket mounted onto the back of the lathe. Then mounted a florescent light on it.
Its a "L" shape with the light clamped on the horizontal part of the conduit.
You can swing it out of the way like a jib crane, when you need to change out the lathe chuck.

With a seven foot ceiling, I would look carefully to see if you have any space above the ceiling for recessed lighthing. If not for flourescent lights, maybe some CFL can lights above key areas.

As for me, I LOVE lots of light. I cannot have enough.

Thank you guys. Dan I like your idea. Thank you for that. Zeke, I have defitnely thought about those bulb protectors!!

Vegaman, I would love to have recessed lighting in the ceiling. It's a 2x6 ceiling, but no can seem to recommend any fixtures that can be set into the ceiling with insulation and finished off. Can you recommend me any?

I used T-8 Tandem light fixtures in my shop, I'd use 5000K bulbs, not the standard 4100K bulbs and I'd get the light protector tubes to go over them. The fixtures are about $50 including the price of the bulbs from Lowes. They can be mounted directly to the wall/ceiling. If you use the little plastic insert that fits the knock out hole them, it makes life easier. By or order the contactor packs of bubs, they're a LOT cheaper that way.
