Would love to see a "Like" button for posts. Sometimes I want to say, "Hey, love your post or pic", but I don't want to muddy up a good thread when a simple "Like" will get the point across.

Nah there are plugins to add just a "thanks" button only and it is very good at 3 things.

Allowing a person an easy way to show appreciation for a post.
Keeping threads on topic/less mucked up with "thank you" posts.
Making the thank receiver feel nice about someone thanking them.

I agree. Sometimes someones response is hilarious and I would like to let them know....but being the 3rd of 4th guy to quote the post and tell him how funny it is seems really redundant and sometimes seems like it could derail where the topic is going.

I understand your point ducksface, I really do, but I think you underestimate the activity here 1, and 2 overestimate the impact a simple thank button would have here as well.

GJ is one of the most healthy forums I have ever been apart of, especially in this day and age of facebook and social media. I have owned, ran, setup, staffed dozens of forums over the years and some died or are still struggling. GJ is an anomaly and would not be affected by a thank button.

It's just a convenience feature. It certainly wouldn't hold anyone back from actually responding to a post.

eta: also i think you are misunderstanding somewhat. we are talking about a "thank" button ONLY, no dislike button or whatever, just a THANK button.

This is exactly what I mean by minimum, in substantial input.
You did not expound, you did not take into account serial violators of social norms that would dislike every single post by some members, you didn't even ask what the
One star bandit was or why it was exampled.

Your response added nothing but doubt if you understanding a situation. No rebuttal, no affirmative, no
Yes, but;

No
How would we implement such a thing and not become something akin to pintrest?

I think I prefer a bit of *********** and discourse over a lazy
Like.

If you're indeed interested in cleaning up the board by discounting some input:
Let's have the ability for every quote to NOT put the damn pictures in it.

We'll use this thread as an example.
I would have already garnered 20 dislikes because it's easy for someone unthinking to hit that button instead of offer a counterpoint.
I'm a big boy with my big girl ******* ALWAYS on, but if you do not know the frailty of some here, you're not paying any attention. A dislike on something they're passionate about, and we'll never see them again.
There's always one that has to make something simple a federal process...

Well post padders are gonna post pad regardless. I see them here too, and I don't really care.

I doubt the staff really cares about post padding as well, the only reason to care is the post limit to use the buy/sell/trade section, if someone is spamming posts to get in there then that is a problem but for a forum, ANY post is a good post cause more content equals more rankings and hits from the Goog.

ANYWAY yeah, we are only talking about a "Thanks" button, no other buttons, there are even way to hide how many thanks a person has or who has thanked them. I can't see it turning into a competition although I understand how you might think that.

I THANK YOU, for your point of view sir.

It probably hasn't been done for maintenance/security concerns if I had to guess. vBulletin runs off of a core software and any features above that core software are called "plugins" and are usually developed by the community.

The "thanks" plugin has been around for ages and there is one available for this version of vB, but being that it is not core software it may have a security issue that hasn't been patched, etc. (highly unlikely), and when doing maintenance on the site it would have to be disabled, then upgraded and re-enabled (possibly) each time.

It is a smidge more work and risk, extremely minimal but still there.

Like buttons are useful because they can help improve search results, however their implementation varies from site to site.

For instance, if you have two posts on the same topic, the one with more likes can appear at the top of search results.

On many of the IT-related sites I frequent for my job, you can vote for the best answer to someone's question, such as when someone asks "how do I solve this problem".

On the other hand, I do believe "Like" buttons are overused today.

Another forum has a "like" button (and nothing else), it not only gives a like total for the post, but populates a little slider bar under the persons name. I don't know how it works, but if you don't get likes, the slider bar slowly disappears over the course of weeks (maybe drops 10% per week, I dunno). No "dislikes", no negative alternative, and it's a way to agree with a post without the drama of our one star wonder-worker.

I don't know, why not try it? If it doesn't work, abolish it. If it works, keep it. I'm fine either way, but it would be interesting to see what would happen IF it were done that way.

Just some of the highlights of quotes from people that seem to understand my original post. The sky won't fall if there's a "like" button. This is a safe place. Just saying... Oh shoot. I broke a nail on this damn keyboard again.
Some folks need to learn how to talk, or type, less. "Like" buttons are nice for people who don't feel the need to spew their verbal (typed) vomit all the time.

Since there's no button I'll tell you I "liked" this response :), I would like to see one as well. I am brand new to the forum & have made a couple threads asking questions & for advice. Since I asked I personally want every commenter to know that I appreciate there response and a "like" button in my opinion is a great way to do that without cluttering up the thread.
