Several years ago, wife wanted a bookcase. Built it from pine, and when I asked her what kind of finish - " No finish, I like it plain". OK, less work for me.

Fast forward to last fall - daughter moving into new apartment - "Dad, can you build me some bookcases?". Sure - how about a couple like mom"s?

OK, bookcases done - what finish? - "No finish, just like mom's".

Go figure.

I usually build all mine without a finish...if the wife wants them finished she knows where the paint brushes are.

Nice attention to detail.....

I just hope that because they like the bare, that it's no reflection on their 'personality'.

Ok.....joking aside....I think I would have at least given them a few coats of clear or toungue oil......it would sure reduce the issues with rings from the beer cans....

Real nice. I think when your child ask you to build something like that for their own apartment it must be a great sence of accomplishment as a father! You did good!

Nice work.

Like most of the members on this forum, I'm sick of living in an Ikea world, and love things with character; whether it's a car, computer, garage, or furniture. As such, I aspire to have your skill-set one day and am loving the process of learning to get there.

Out of curiosity @Alchymist, how long did it take you to build those bookcases?

First of all, thanks to everyone for the compliments.

As to time, since there was no finishing involved, I think about 2 days or a little more. Hardest part was keeping all the shelves in the dadoes at once when glueing up. (Still haven't got garage organized - was working on the table saw and the garage floor). Sanding all the trim cutouts took the longest.`

Actually, if your daughter built them herself after you taught her woodworking - that would be an accomplishment! That way you would have more time for the real projects
They look great by the way

Made this for last Christmas "Chinese gift" party. DIL's aunt grabbed it, and DIL was disappointed, but let her aunt "win" it.

And no, the dent in the left door was not in there at the party. Didn't get any pictures until after it was installed.
