Love this welder .
My problem is I used to use 10lb spools and switched to two lb . It seems the tension screw that holds the spool on tightens by itself , thus not feeding wire . I have been racking my brains thinking I couldn't weld or set machine correctly . Than I realized that the spool wasn't turning when I pulled trigger .
Has anyone else had this problem or have any Ideas . Its really frustrating

If it's a plastic thumb screw, GENTLY upset the threads so it will stay set when you thread it in. I put it on the anvil of my vise and usually three or four light smacks with a hammer does the trick.

Thank you for the replies
BigMike 782 do you mean mess up the threads? On purpose. It is a plastic thumbscrew

A washer won't work, it will only tighten things up on the washer. You could try a short spring behind the screw so you can put a little tension but the spring will act as sort of a lockwasher by pushing on the wingnut.

ANd what BigMike stated, mess up the screws on the plastic nut and it will act like a locknut. OR got to the Farm Store and get a locking nut that has nylon in it. Grab a few and leave them in the welder. WHen one goes bad, put another on.

Strange. My Hobart and Miller feed from the bottom but counter clockwise. Is the spool on the other side on a Lincoln?

Sounds like you are doing it the way the owner's manual says to do it:

To use 4" (100 mm) diameter spools, the 2" (50 mm)
diameter spindle must be removed. Remove the
thumb screw at the end of the shaft and remove the
spindle. It can be stored in the wire feed compartment.
A 4" (100 mm) diameter spool is mounted directly on
the 5/8" (16 mm) diameter shaft and held in place with
the previously removed thumb screw. Make certain
that the thumbscrew is tightened fully clockwise. Also
make certain the start end of the wire which may protrude
through the side of the spool does not contact
any metallic case parts.

Can you adjust the set screw (17) to keep the thumb screw (15) from bottoming on the spool?

My weldpak 100 had same problem. I found a write up on internet that I used for fix. I removed the plastic part and replaced it with a threaded bolt with the head cut off. Screwed the bolt in till it bottomed and then used a fender washer, a standard nut, and a wing nut. Just tighten the nut enough to get the correct tension and then hold the nut with a wrench and tighten the wing nut against the standard nut.

Usa#1 , funnyu said that .I was at HD today so I looked at the weldpac .They had put a boldt in with a notch init and nylon washer went on than a wingnut . So obviously I am not the only one that that has had this problem. My welder is one of the first ,I bought it when SP100s first came out . My duty cycle is much better having bought at a welding store and not a home Depot
Welder 4956 I dont know if i can adj. that I will go look . Thanks

I ran into the same problem which is what led me to just start using the larger spools ;)

Still, my fix for the small spools was the screw up the threads a little to prevent creep.

Mine has the set screw (#17) as well. I adjusted it several times and it would work for a while and then would screw up again. I got tired of messing with it and fixed it with the bolt and wing nut.

I used a 2lb spool in my sp100 last winter. It did the same thing. I finally just left it off. I couldn't wait to finish that spool and go back to a 12lb spool.
