look up info on John Deere 318 re-powers, they came with Onan opposed twin engines and now many people are re-powering them with either Honda, Kohler, or Briggs vanguard V-twin engines. You my be able to come up with some ideas based on what they are doing, in my opinion I would re-power with a Honda. if you can determine the crank size and specifications that will be helpful in determining the correct replacement as I bet it has a tapered crank.

here is an option form Honda http://engines.honda.com/models/model-detail/gx630

Any engine with a similar pto end of the crank will work.( this is with the thinking this particular engine mounts up like most generators and not at the flywheel side. If it's flywheel side, any engine for a shaft driven garden tractor will probably work.) That's the easiest way without having to make an adapter. Otherwise small engines are standard enough that bolting one similar size engine in place of another is pretty easy.

PTO shaft size needs checked as some manufacturers would specify an oddball size sometimes. Shaft to deck height (engine base) would be another critical measurement.

I've got a Lincwelder 225. Mine has an adapter that bolts on the rotor. Standard crank, I believe.
I overhauled my Onan several years back. It was pricey, but not that bad.
What's wrong with yours?

I did new valves, rings, bearings, and .020 over pistons for around $300-350. Considering I only gave $100 for the whole thing, I had room to spend a bit.
Sad part was that it had just been overhauled before I got it.
Previous owner let it sit outside and water got in and ate up valves and pitted cylinder walls.

If it was easy everyone including guy that owns it now would do it. I must know qo guys with busted engines they gonna fix, aint seen 1 yet. I would be impressed. Otherwise its a brain fart, find differnt model that runs with more common engine and better generator.

its a extremely cheap welder on craigslist, problem is looks like a piston let go, and a rod is hanging out of the block lol... I've looked on craigslist, there's plenty of 17-20hp small engines. but this is a side project, I don't want to have to spend a month making it work.. so unless its unbolt, bolt and go, I'm going to pass it up... I could order a short block, but those are also expensive, I would lean towards a honda too.. or at least a brigs. anyone know if a brigs opposed twin of the same output has any similarity with the onan?

and I did stumble upon that, thing is, the way they are powered is there is just a pulley that drives a belt, very easy to convert to what ever you want. at least that's what i gathered from the write up.
