I know zip about welding but want to learn. Friend offered the shown welder for $100. Pic is lacking but says it works "great." Thoughts?

I have one I inherited from my grandpa...very common and pretty nice. They are still made today. However, they are AC only, so you have to use AC variants. Overall decent. They are kinda heavy, I personally think $100 is OK, $75 would be great.

That same welder is either $299.00 or $399.00 at the Farm & Fleet store new. I have the same welder and have had it for 20 some years.I would jump on it for that price. Learn how to weld on this and you'll want a mig welder next.

He's right. Welders are crazy expensive now...make sure it works though. And don't worry if the electrode holder is marked up....$12 at Farm & Fleet gets you a nice new one. All it takes is a pair of dykes to snip the old one.

I like 6013 to mess around. 7018AC works but I have never had good luck/results.

You can also run Ac 7018 rod. 6011 is great on these welders. I learned how to weld on one of these with 6011.

just pay the guy $100, no sense trying to screw your buddy out of money, he ask a 100 for a reason, quit being cheap. its a damn good welder and worth every penny, even if it was $200

I have that same welder that I have used ALOT! They are built like a tank and can tackle much heavier steel than the 120volt mig welders IMHO.

Those are very good welders , dependable and easy to use good duty cycle. I recently sold one like that for $200.00 and bought an ac/dc version .

When looking for 7018 welding rod, only use the AC version with that welder. Regular 7018 is made for DC use, and 7018AC is for AC use.

I like 7018. I find it easier to control than 6011, but you have to have clean metal at the joint before you start welding. Also, it absorbs moisture if not kept dry in a sealed or gasketed container. Damp 7018 causes a brittle weld. Get the right rod and keep it dry and you will be fine.

This is a good basic machine that will outlast you!

Don't offer less just to offer less, he's giving you a very fair deal at $100 for a working unit with no troubles. Around here they run $150 plus second hand.

At least first check you local craigslist first to see what the going rate is, before pushing out an offer.

^^^ I agree. If you give him what he's asking, which is a fair price, he'll likely throw in any extra rods, etc. that he has. If you nickle and dime him he'll likely throw them out.

I learned to weld on my Dad's Lincoln 225 in the 60's. Although he's still around his welder is long gone. I've had my own though for years. Great basic welder.
