I have been researching LED fixtures for my new garage.I need 32 4' fixtures.I see some are "linkable" and some are not. What does this mean? There is a 15 pack on amazon prime that is "not linkable" for $300,which is a steal (I think)My plan was to surface mount them 16" apart and connect them with 1/2" plastic pipe, daisy chaining the wires. Will this work with these fixtures?

"linkable" means each fixture has a female connector on the other end; you can "daisy chain" them, but typically only 3 or 4 fixtures are mfg recommended... Steve

look into this sticky post by Platonic Solid https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278420
he's really done his home work.

I tried the GLL bulbs and MaxLite fixtures.
REALLY happy with them. They are definitely brighter and whiter than the lights I got at costco and on amazon. If you're willing to put them together and wire 'em up they are a much better light.

Not saying you can put 15 on a circuit - consult an electrician for that.

The people at ProLighting were really great too! ...

P.S. the linkable ones I have say max 4 lights linked.

Many quality fixtures have knockouts on the ends for linking with conduit or butting together. I just installed 18 James diffuser 4’ LEDs and have 10 more to go. Quality lights. But $42 each.

I would have only 5 on a circuit. What is it that limits the circuit to 4 -5 fixtures?

Without looking at the light specifications, I can't say for sure... so take my comment with a grain of salt.

When some of the "linkable" LED lights are used together, it's assumed that when they are linked you have power to light number one, then power flows through the light to number 2, through to number 3, etc... 1-2-3-4. The wiring in the light can only handle so much power before it burns out, so the light manufacturer will tell you the maximum you can hook up in a row.

For example, if a single light was 60 watts at 120 volts, it pulls 0.5A alone. The next one in line also pulls 0.5A, and so on. The problem is, light number one might only have wires rated for up to 2.5A total... so you'd be at the maximum limit at light number 5. Light number 6 would heat up the wiring beyond the safe levels, and let the magic smoke out.

Now... you could connect a bunch of these lights on one circuit, and depending on what size wire you ran would determine how many lights you could have on that circuit total.

So for example, if you ran #14 from your breaker panel to a square box, you could connect to "String A" with lights A1 through A5 in a row. Then continue the #14 to the next box for "String B" with lights B1 through B5, then over to String C for lights C1 through C5. Each string would pull 2.5A each, or 7.5A total on your one circuit. Like this:

Power
I
Box 1 - Light A1 - Lt A2 - Lt A3 - Lt A4 - Lt A5
I
Box 2 - Light B1 - Lt B2 - Lt B3 - Lt B4 - Lt B5
I
Box 3 - Light C1 - Lt C2 - Lt C3 - Lt C4 - Lt C5

You can do variations on this, like having three strings on three light switches, but still on one circuit. Or individual circuits feeding each string, etc...

Hope this helps.

Mark

I just installed Sams Club Honeywell 4' LED multi-mode lights. They are linkable to 10 lights. They are fantastic. They were on sale but they are price prety good. They are really bright.

The internal wiring is the limiter. If you use 14-2 and **** the lights or connect via conduit and make the connection to the smaller light wires inside the light body and then continue on with your 14-2 to the next light, you can run about 35 40 watt LED lights off the 14-2 on a 15 amp circuit (80% capacity) unless your wiring run is hundreds of feet.

I have these same Sams Club lights in my garage and basement! They are much brighter than the old fluorescent shop lights they replaced, especially when you put them in the highest mode, which is the 5000 lumens setting.

The only downside I have seen so far with these lights is that the bulbs are not frosted, so you can see each individual LED in the string. If you look into the light directly, it can create some nice dotted effects when you look away!

But after you know they are there, just like any other light fixture, you learn not to stare into them.

And as you said, you can link up to 10 lights together.

Here is the Sams Club website for the 10 pack of lights:

https://www.samsclub.com/sams/10pk-shoplight-set-sh450503q010/prod22191109.ip?xid=plp_product_1_2

They are not on sale at the moment, so they are selling for $30 each. But they do go on sale from time to time for just $19 each.

I have had the amazon ones for over a year. No failures. I have two strings that are 3 lights long. Then some random task lighting. These lights are really good for spreading light around a room/garage.

As others have already said, linkable usually means there is a female connector on one end so you can easily link a bunch of them together.

$20 for each is a pretty good deal, too bad you're not closer, the stores here have linkable Maxlight brand 4' long 4100 lumen LED 40W shop lights for $15, (but I think they had some sort of payment deal from the State so they could sell them so cheap). I also got some of the Feit brand ones from Costco, not linkable and the specs aren't quite as good (3900 lumens vs 4100 lumens).

I'm almost wondering if it would be easier to string a bunch of outlets if they come with a plug already attached.

I have 16 of the single mode ones, been up about 16 months. I have no complaints. Most I have linked is 7.
