Liquid Nails: Apparently not for Garage Threshold

It appears i made a big mistake. I bought thresholds to install under my garage door. I had read on Amazon comments and I think even here somewhere, "Use liquid nails instead of the stuff they send you.

So I grabbed a couple tubes of LN's that I had laying around and went to town. Welp, it didn't harden up and it isn't securing the threshold.

A little back ground, I had just recently put an epoxy floor in my garage with 2 layers of clear coat on top so I'm thinking that could possibly be one of the issues?

  • I know this is dumb but I'm guessing there are multiple types of liquid nails and I happened to have the wrong kind?

  • Now what do I do? It looks to be quite the mess. I pulled up a part of it and it basically looks like a bunch of wood glue underneath. I'm going to have a hell of a time getting it all cleaned up off the threshold and floor. Any ideas on a good way to get it cleaned up?

  • what do you recommend I use instead to secure the threshold once I get it all cleaned up?

The "recipe" for all these type of adhesives have changed because of low VOC rules... However the polyurethane adhesives have not changed...

Anyhow liquid nails now needs more time to dry, which it will after several days. Will it adhere a sill to concrete? I have no idea...

That's one that cures as the solvent evaporates. If the threshold doesn't allow the solvent to get through, it can take a very long time to dry.

If it were me, I'd scrape up as much as possible with a spackle knife, and leave it exposed to the air for a day to dry. Then re-apply a better adhesive.

What's strange to me is so many reviews said that the stuff they send with the threshold ***** and you should use liquid nails. Grrrr.......

I just looked at the stuff they sent with the threshold.....yep.....PL 375 Heavy Duty construction adhesive.

guess I'll buy another tube of that and use it instead.....

Thanks

you say you used liquid nails, but not what type exactly.

what liquid nails was recommended, and what did you use? you say "So i grabbed a couple tubes of LN's that I had laying around and went to town..."

there are probably 30 or more liquid nails formulations/products for all kinds of applications.

did you use a sealant or an adhesive? how old were your tubes? i have had tubes go bad when they sit in an unheated garage for years. i have also had some that worked just fine after sitting for years...

I used LN Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive. It says "interior & Exterior"

I am now realizing that there are many types of LN's. I'm so cornfused!!!

Looking at the Loctite PL 375 Heavy Duty construction adhesive that was included in the threshold kit, it really doesn't look to be much different of a product than the LN's I used.

pl ultra....

we use in in our retaining wall construction/concrete srw stair buiding, etc..

it adheres so well to the concrete blocks, the concrete fails before the glue.

Well now you know how much stock to put in stuff you read on the internet! Personally, I would have used the stuff that the manufacturer specified if only because of the fact that in the event of a failure, you would have recourse through them.

Nearly every adhesive including polyurethanes have a component of their curing based on the evaporation of solvents. In your OP you stated that the floor is finished and I'm assuming that the threshold is being applied onto a coated floor. The solvent evaporation would be very slow and it could indeed take days for the adhesive to cure. That's still no reason to disregard the manufacturers instructions.

Right now, you have a mess on your hands and a call to the manufacturer, explaining what happened would result in the aforementioned hands getting slapped. You could however, call them to ask about the specified products' affinity for the floor coating.

Now after warning you about internet advice, you may find that a product like 3M weatherstrip adhesive would be a good choice, especially if your clear topcoat is a urethane. Remember, you're not bonding the rubber to concrete but to the topcoat of your garage floor

I would use PL 400 subfloor adhesive. Sets up faster than the PL Premium.

Sure it does, the the holding power of premium is like 900lbs/inch. Pl400 is just that, 400lbs/inch.

This is what I was told by their rep anyhow.

Installed many Thresholds over the years using only the adhesive supplied by MFG. Never had a call back! Funny how so many on the Internet have ******** opinions. If they wanted you to use Liquid Nails, it would be sold with the Threshold. :dunno:

I've also seen liquid nails go bad after a while....if they've been laying around for a while, that might be your problem. I experienced that with some tubes I had stored for 1 to 2 years. The adhesive came out of the tube much lighter than normal and some of the tube had cured (near the bottom I think).

Upndown i spot on. I have installed 12 of the tsunami door seals that come with the PL product. Never an issue and one was hit with the plow truck did not budge. Not sure why all the bad press on the internet installation comments but if you leave the threshold inside over night and let it warm up, clean t concrete ad mak sure it is dry, use the product you get with kit, things work well.

I forgot I had made this thread last fall. I am looking at redoing this sometime this summer. I'll have to review and try it. Unless anyone has any more suggestions.
