Liquid tite fitting question

I bought Hubell Raco brand metal Liquidtite fittings. They come with a yellow split ring washer/gasket that goes around the conduit. There is also a yellow flat washer between the body of the fitting and the lock ring. My guess is that this is a waterproof seal that is meant to go between the fitting and j box and the lock ring then bites down directly on the j box. Is this correct?

Should I install a redhead sleeve on the inside of the fitting on the j box side?

You are correct. I have never installed anything other than the fitting. There should be a metal piece that threads into the sealtite that covers the sharp edges.

The steel ferrule that threads into the sealtite is imperative for proper bonding of the sealtite to the fitting body.

OP, you are correct. The lock ring bonds the fitting to the enclosure via the body threads and the lock ring teeth. The teeth have small knurles on them to get through the enclosure coating and dig into the metal body of the enclosure. Using the weather seal between the fitting body and the enclosure also allows the seal to be compressed when tightening the lock ring. Allows for a more positive connection, IMO.


For a steel bodied fitting, they make insulated bushings to thread onto the fitting inside the enclosure to protect the wiring coming out of the fitting. If your fitting has a plastic sleeve inside the threaded portion already you don’t need one.

What are you referring to when you say redhead sleeve?

Those are for AC or MC cable, not sealtite. Sealtite doesn't require any bushing like that. The metal sleeve that screws into the sealtite that comes with the fitting provides the same protection as those redheads provide for AC cable.

I looked at the fitting closer and the inside is very smooth so no need for a bushing. Thanks
