Anyone know if the AC whips sold by Lowes/HD use standard connectors and can be taken apart and shortened? I can't really tell looking at the sealed bag. Buying a 6' whip and shortening it to my required 3' would be cheaper than buying all the individual parts and 10 gauge wire.

I just installed a 5K watt electric ceiling heater in my basement shop and have temporarily powered it by running the romex direct into the heater. I want to do this right and liquidtight seems an easy way to go.

I've got the heater hanging from one of the trusses. Can I just add a junction box on the truss and switch from romex to THHN? Plastic box OK?

Thanks.

I have done exactly this (shortening a whip) on several projects, with whips from HD...

The tightening on a metal box vs. plastic is a non issue. Use a plastic box because you don't have to mess with grounding the box.

Is it really that much work to add a ground? I mean, one is passing through the box already, right?

Yes, the liquidtite non metallic flex sold in the bag at Lowes with # 10 THHN in it, pull the wire out and you can cut it with a razor knife, they have the appropriate connectors right next to these.

That's how I connected my lift. I bought the whip at Lowes, unscrewed the connector, cut the conduit and screwed the connector back into the conduit.

Thanks guys for the information. I wasn't sure if the prepackaged whips had the fittings permanently molded on or not. Picked one up today and it's going to work fine. Just need to get the right handybox with the wings so I can mount it on the side of the truss facing down. I'm going to get a metal box and pigtail a ground lead to the box. I'll do a metal cover as well. The rest of the basement shop boxes are metal so I might as well be consistant.

I think we might have a semantics issue, when you referred to "Handy Box", Norcal was thinking the following - which is known in the trade as a "Handy Box":

What I think you are referring to is something like the following:

Handy Boxes are a not very "Handy" because there is not much room to work in them especially for larger conductors. Just be sure to get a box that allows you to connect the liquid-tite though the cover. You may have to get a blank cover and make your own opening for the liquid-tite fitting if it's 3/4, most covers only have 1/2" knockouts.

No plastic cover has the strength to have a KO punched into it & survive any pull on a fitting.

Duh.. you're right. I forgot all about the knockout suggestion in the cover plate and I was the one who suggested it. :headscrat

Could use one of these surface mounted.
