I started this project back in October/November (of 2012).

I'll post pictures as soon as I have access to my computer at home. I wanted to go ahead and start a thread as a place holder, and before I get too far gone with the build; which would make posting the pictures all that more of a daunting task.

Progress is fairly slow-going as I have been doing everything myself (with some friends/family when available) except for the actual pouring of the concrete. I decided to leave that to the professionals.

Currently the slab is poured, the framing is done, all the windows and doors are in (had to take advantage of the help available, or I would've waited until the building was finished).

I am searching for the best price I can find on tin to get the whole thing covered (and fix the roof on the house at the same time) without completely draining me. I was woefully mis-informed about the cost of tin before I started the project.


The garage is 26 x 36, 12 foot plate height, with 4 on 12 trusses that I built on site. It has one 36" walk through, two 3/0-5/0 windows (donated by my father in law), one 1-6 x 2/0 window in a small bathroom, a 14 x 10 commercial roll-up, and a 10 x 10 storage-style roll up.

The roll-up doors are mismatched, but I got a hell of a deal on them.

I'll leave it here for now. Add pics this weekend, and discuss my future plans. Any questions on cost or difficulty or anything else are more than welcome.

I'll lead with this.

This is a picture from the back side of what I removed to begin the process.

This is the back wall of an old, almost falling down, carport that was in the back yard just off the driveway. It was about 20 x 20 or so.

To the right of it is 4 trees and a shed. I removed the trees with a chainsaw, a friend, and a 4 wheel drive.

The shed was turned 90 degrees and moved to the end of the driveway (also with a 4 wheel drive), which can be seen in later pictures.

Pay no attention to a portion of our dog army.


This evening, I'm going to find some other pics from the driveway side of what was demo'd to start the project.

Okay.....I can't actually find any really clear pictures of what I started with, but here's a few pics that will give you an idea.

Here, in the back ground (blue plywood) is the back side of the carport I removed. You can also see the trees and the other shed that we moved.



This pic is for reference, so you can see where the shed has been moved to (in future pics).



This is a picture of our old garden with the shed that was moved in the background. The new garage extends all the way to the tree on the right side of the shed and the hill and all of the brush has been removed.



This pic is showing the inside of the old carport while my charger was parked in it, just to give you an idea of how old and pretty run down the carport was.

Once everything was cleared it was time to set corners.

Then I removed all the asphalt that was inside of the form, set all of the stakes, and started the dirt work. It took me about a month of working on it part time to get the form and dirt work done.

Then, with my wife assisting, the plastic and rebar went in and the rest of the form was completed.

The smaller ones are some kind of trash/weed kind of thing that only has surface roots, and they are coming out. There aren't any roots extending under the slab area, what was there was cut during forming.

The larger tree at the rear of the shop my wife has decided she wants to get rid of. It's a china berry tree that strangely doesn't have any roots growing under the slab either (maybe from all the rock the previous owners put in? i don't know), but it will be coming out as soon as the adjacent two sides of the shop are done and I don't need it to hold up the temporary fence any longer.

Then we had 16 yards of concrete poured.

I had them pour a small slab in front of the garden shed that I'm going to turn into an art studio for my wife.

While waiting for the slab to cure a bit I decided to take care of that awful electrical mess on the back of the shed.

Then it was time to frame it.

Took a couple of weeks to get the trusses built and installed.

My father in law and I designed them and I built them on site.

My whole band showed up and surprised me and we installed all the trusses in about 2 hours.

Since we had the extra help on hand, we hung the windows and the door and installed the roll up doors (because they were heavy as hell and we had to do them by hand).

Unfortunately my phone crashed and I lost my in-process tin pics.

Last night my little sister and I finished the tin on all 4 walls up to the plate.

I'll take some pics of the finished wall tin tomorrow for posting.

Next up is to install the gable vents and stud up the gables to run the tin on them, and then finish framing out the trusses to get them ready for tin. Then it'll stay dry inside and I'll get to start electrical fun.

Project is definitely taking longer than anticipated.

At this point I figure I've saved myself around 2 grand by doing it myself with the help of family and friends.

I'm currently into the project for around $4000 total. I believe I'll have it functionally finished for around $7000. I'll be happy with that price considering the size of the garage.

Of course, 2 or so years from now when it's "done" done, it'll probably be closer to 20 grand.

The silver one is an 86.5 parts car. The blue one is an 88 turbo 5 speed with a targa top and the white one is an 89 na auto that's my wife's toy. Love the supras, but my baby is the 73 charger. That's the car the garage is really being built for. The supras just get to reap the rewards.

You can also see that the temp fence is gone and the gate has been installed to the back of the garage so that the tree removal can continue.

Not a whole lot accomplished this weekend. Trimmed both of the **** trees that are close to the garage and started digging around them to get them out.

Studded up the gables and put in the gable vents and added the cross bracing for the roof.

There is an 8 x 8 footing around the perimeter of the slab. The rest of the slab is @5" thick. There is 3/8" rebar on 16" centers throughout and a double run of rebar at the bottom of the footings. There are also sticks of rebar bent at 90 degress and driven into the ground at each corner that extend to the center of the slab, like a big "X".

The concrete is 3500 psi.

It's hard to see in the pictures because of the doors, but the roll up doors have 2x12 headers above them. The walk through door and windows have 2x4 headers with 1/2 plywood and are glued and screwed.

If you scroll up to the pictures of the framing before the tin is on you can see the headers above the doors, etc.

Update:

The two trees that were close to the shop are gone.

I built a mezzanine area around 1/2 of the shop at 8' tall and did some interesting trim work on it.

The concrete is acid-etched and painted armour gray with purple, maroon, blue, black, white, and chrome chips and acrylic clear.

My wifes art studio is completely redone with new floors/ceiling/ac installed, etc.

The tin is 26 gauge corrugated, galvanized sheet metal.

Latest project. Need to refoam and reupholster yet, but I turned the original front seat from my project car into a love seat for the garage.

Car has been converted to bucket seats.

If anyone has any info on auto upholstery I'd appreciate it. Current estimates are putting foam and upholstery around $4-500. I would really not like to spend that much.

The build was a little odd in that aspect. The doors went in early because I had to take advantage of the help I had, when I had it. The tin on the walls was done first because I had the material and wanted to get it on the walls to stiffen things up. Also, I had to hire someone to help with the roofing, as I couldn't do it myself.

The availability and amount of assistance I had determined most of what could be done, and when.

Latest updates:

Working on getting some storage and useable space going so the projects can come in and get back in process. Still need stand-alone electrical, and planning to find the septic and get the water lines and toilet finished this weekend.

In the mean time, my wife got me a HF 5 drawer tool cart to help with tool re-organization. I built a 16 foot long work bench on one wall with a small shelving unit on the end of it, and turned the bottom boxes of my old tool boxes into a roll around work surface:

The far end will have doors eventually, and I'll be finishing the front of the cabinet to match the trim on the mezzanine.
