You do not have to remove the heads if you plan ahead. I belong to an F150 Forum and a lot of people can pull them without breaking a single plug. There are how tos!

I am a member there too, but I don't plan on having a vehicle sit in my driveway for a week while I try to find time to get around to working on it for no reason.

Also those how tos help, but they don't promise 100% success. It is better to be prepared then to knowingly screw myself.

i am ford tech(heavy line tech) i do those a lot even i has two set of lisle broke 5.4L spark plug tools... it is still work great... BUT i always sell the terra Decarb kit to clean the injectors and clean the combustion chambers... when it got done, i can pull the spark plug as simple and it do clean pretty good BUT sometime carbon got so hard and broke few of them.. it is much better than no decarbs kit that would cause more break...

The tool will work and works well. But no tool you buy or simple short cuts are going to be 100% with out any carnage. So if you are not properly tooled up to do the job even if the head needs to come off. Have a pro do it.

Clean the Injectors with a good Machine like Motorvac. Seems to soften the carbon. We have had good luck doing this first. Make sure to soak from the top also.

Make sure the #7989 Champions are installed if done by a pro.The #7989s are a one piece design that do come out and are $25.00 a piece. You will pay up to $700.00 for this job.

700 bucks for a spark plug change!!!!! :shocking:

Modern engineering combined with another one of Ford's better ideas?
I sure don't envy you guys that have to work on modern junk for a living.

Ford tech here as well. Get the truck nice and toasty and then rip the coils out as fast as you can. Soak plugs with tuneup cleaner and work it out as if you were working a tap. Have had good success that way. Just the odd one that breaks.

I've also used alot of different 5.4 plug tools. The napa one seems to work the best if one decides to let go on you.

Yes,$700.00 to change plugs on a 3 valve triton to have a shop to do it including the dealer.Ford does not recomend the #7989 spark plugs and most techs do since the #7989 Champion is a one piece design.Autolite's design is the two piece design.

I thought about creating a Ford 5.4 Spark plug removal community.

We all chip in $10 and buy the tool. We all pass it around and use it, then when others need it for their plug change, they pay the $10, and the original tool owners get paid back dividends on others investment in the Lisle tool.
I figure in a months time we'd be making a TON of money on our spark plug changes!

 I guess its the accountant in me.

Hahaha! Don't mean to make fun of ford guys. It's just that I'm not familiar with the triton and just checked this thread to see what a Lisle 65600 is.

Now you've really got me curious, I'm gonna have to stop by the parts store and see one of those spark plugs... LOL What do you mean by 1 or 2 piece? Do they actually thread together or something? Again, not makin fun just curious. all spark plugs that I know of have a few different components, but are 1 piece, (unless ya break 'em).

The factory plug is made in two pieces and Champion made the design better with a one piece design.Champion made the tip of the spark plug smaller so they come out.The factory tip is a little too big.Ford did put a new revise on the spark plug change intervals at 30,000 miles and the plugs still break off.
