I was lucky enough to find a used 91000 drill bit sharpener on CL. The problem is someone put one of the gray 60 grit wheels on it which causes discoloring on larger 3/4 bits and larger. I cant buy the original wheels anymore because they no longer make them (5x3/4x1) I can only buy 6x3/4/1 so I will have to shave them down to work. I can buy a 60 grit or a 100 grit, any suggestions on which grit to buy for HSS drill bits. Thanks everyone for your time.

I think l found you a wheel. The Wolff Twice As Sharp Scissor sharpening machine uses a 100 grit stone that is 5" dia., has a 1" bore and comes with several reduction bushings, down to 1/2". The published specs are so screwed up I cannot tell the width but it could be in the ball park. It is a Norton wheel and under 20 bucks on eBay and Amazon or from Wolff. You should be able to get the exact specs from Wolff. Good luck and tell us how you made out.

Thanks for the find. Wolf's wheels are only 1/2 wide, but again I appreciate the effort

If I do have to purchase a 6 inch wheel does anyone have a suggestion on how to grind it down to 5 inches. What kind of a dresser would you use?

The original Lisle wheels do show up on ebay from time to time. I got one from ebay 3 weeks ago.

There is an outfit called Grinding Wheel Warehouse that invites you to call with your special needs. You are sharpening a drill bit. They will be able to reccomend the best material and grit. It does not necessarily have to be exactly what Lisle used. There have been advances here too.

19A60-08V is the number on the Norton wheel that was on my Lisle when I got it.
Looking on ebay at a complete auction for a genuine Lisle wheel, the number is WA60-L8V6. These number are somewhat similar, so maybe the wheels are 60 grit? Truthfully I am not sure.

Here is a link for a completed auction for a Lisle wheel. Don't know if the link will come through, as it's a long one:

Thanks everyone I am going to try a Norton 07660788205, it is 100 grit, K in hardness, 57 A, 5x3/4x1. It was the closest one to original that Norton makes. They laughed at me when I said i wanted to try to shave down a 6 inch to make it a 5 inch. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Wear a good respirator and eye protection. There is goIng to be a LOT of dust. Are you using a diamond dresser?
Didn't that warehouse have anything?. What would happen if you used that 1/2" wide wheel? There are a lot if specialty places on line. Somebody must have something closer.

Yes that is 60 grit.
That will cut cooler than a 100 grit but, like all grinding wheels, for a good finish you need a well dressed wheel.
(you know, tux and tails.)

I bought a Norton Premium White Bench and Pedestal Abrasive Wheel, Type 01 Straight, Aluminum Oxide, 1" Arbor, 6" Diameter x 3/4" Thickness, Grit Medium 60 from Amazon for $27.82. Then I used a DESMOND 11210 Huntington Type Dresser to take the diameter down to 5 1/2 inches. Worked perfectly in my 91000.
