Lisle low profile filter sockets

Are there any cars where one of these sockets are a must? Or even where it is really helpful? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0029XK48O/?tag=atomicindus08-20. It has 24, 27, 29, 32, and 35/36. I've done some oil changes on cars that needed some of these sizes for their canister but I just used a regular socket. But was wondering if there are vehicles where these are a must? Which vehicles? Also how does the 35/36 combo socket work? Is it just a 36 and the filters are low enough torque that it will also work on a 35? Just trying to see if I will need any of these sockets in the future. Was making a rock auto order and I always add a couple tools to my orders and saw this set.

I've not used that particular set, but I do have a socket made by Lisle for changing my oil filter and primary fuel filter on my 6.0L powerstroke. It is a 3/8th drive 36 mm and yes, these filters have a plastic housing with an o-ring with a low torque value of 25 N-m/19 lb-ft. Of course, I'm not aware of normal 3/8 socket sets with a 36 mm socket and most torque wrenches in larger drives don't cover that low of a torque. So it is useful in that instance if you intend to use a torque wrench. Lots of guys have broken their filter caps on the 6.0 from torquing them too tight. I used to just do it by feel with my 3/4 drive socket set but prefer using the Lisle socket now. Never broke my filter cap before using my torque wrench though.

There is also a secondary fuel filter on my powerstroke that requires a 24 mm socket.

Right, on the amazon site it says what vehicles it fits. But I've done some of those vehicles just using a standard socket. I did a BMW with the canister on the bottom and think it was a 24mm. Just used my 24mm socket. I was just wondering what vehicles this set fits that it is a MUST to use these low profile sockets on?

The 3/8" drive low torque makes sense.

The ecotec is basically either those low profile sockets or tear up the plastic filter cap with an adjustable or something and replace it every few years.

I use the low profile sockets all the time, but im in Europe working on cars not sold in the USA. Some cars like Peugeot's for example a low profile is the only way.

Don't have the Lisle set, but have the equivalent 6pc. Gearwrench set (LINK). Picked up my set from Amazon a couple weeks back for $28 shipped.

Use them on a 2.2L EcoTec Saturn Ion, and a 2003 MINI Cooper S. The fact they are 3/8" drive allows for more clearance of the socket extension to the intake manifold on the Saturn when pulling the filter cap. And their shallow depth is a must on the MINI as there isn't enough room behind the filter housing for a traditional 36mm socket and 1/2" ratchet before running into the strut tower. Great buy and I've been happy with my Gearwrench set. I think either set would be fine, especially since they are used for low torque applications.

Older ecotecs like a cavalier or cobalt you're fine using a socket but some newer ones like equinox you really need one of these to get in there. Not needed but very helpful on minis & fiats. I hate fiats. I have the 32 & borrow my buddy's gearwrenches for other sizes if he's around. I've never not been able to get one with a regular socket though besides those newer 2.2s.

Thanks guys. I added it to my cart on rockauto. Ever since I found out rockauto sells tools I've been adding one or two to every order. The lisle tools are a lot cheaper at rockauto then amazon and most other places. For 27 bucks I figured like you guys said it will be nice to have them all together when needed. And I like the 3/8" drive, wasn't real thrilled about using a 1/2" drive on that bmw filter housing I did the other week.

I have a fll80 I have to use sometimes. You can't really put them on too tight they have thick threads. But if you don't lube the oring they seem to be hell to get off.

Toyota flat cups are the only ones I've ever had issues getting off. One needed an air hammer lol

Nah, I used my regular 24mm socket on a MINI Clubman, I might have used a wobble extension with it though, can't remember for sure.

sometimes the low profile socket is very much needed...

i have the gearwrench 6pc set... i have never used the 29 or 38mm and rarely use the 27

24 gets used quite often on chrysler/dodge/jeep with the pentastar V6 as well as a handful of GM vehicles

32 gets used all the time

36 when the occasional german car comes in

On the toyotas spray the housing with brake clean. Makes the metal expand or shrink (whichever it needs to do). Just learned that after years.

I use the GearWrench 41890 set. Its a 6 piece set. The Ecotec is the only one I know of that you have to have the low profile for and its only certain ones. But the whole set is handy.

Volkswagens use the 36. Mine is Stahlwille.

On the volkswagen you could easily use a regular socket, but a low profile 3/8 socket is cheaper and easier to find than a quality full size 36mm.

Diesel filters iirc. Some of the sizes work on fuel filters.

Since I had to look up what a Vauxhall is I think it's safe to say I won't miss the 38mm that doesn't come in the lisle set.
