List of common axle nut sockets

What are the common axle nut sizes and what vehicles need what size? I know they are mostly 29-36 mm with some other sizes and I believe there are some 12 points that are needed also. I have a 30, 33, and 36 and would like to fill in the blanks. I'm just a home mechanic but end up working on all my stuff, families stuff, and friends stuff. So a variety of vehicles from ford cars and trucks, chevy cars, dodge trucks, hondas, chrysler cars, and various others. I like to have the tools I need when I need them. So when I have some extra money I look for deals or used so I have it when I need it.

i've seen 30mm 32mm 34mm and 36mm.

the only one i don't have is 34mm

With what you have, the next ones I'd suggest are 32 and 34mm. The only 12 point axle nut socket I've needed recently was a 30mm.

30/31 seems relatively common on stuff I've seen, 30mm stock, 31mm replacement part.

12pt 30mm and 39mm for Toyota.

32mm for Honda.

28 on rear wheel bearings ford focus. 36 seems most common in my cases, seen a couple 30's and 32's

I got their 3/4" socket set for like $40 a few years back. Covers 29-38mm. Works well enough for axle nuts as well.

I've thought about that and it's on sale right now and would be 48 bucks after coupon but I wondered about depth of the sockets since some of the axles can stick out of the nut and the 3/4" sockets aren't deep sockets. Any issues there?

I haven't had that issue yet, though that thought has crossed my mind as well. 3/4" sockets are rather deep to begin with.

KD brand sells a whole set of axle nut sockets that are rather good quality for less than $100 too, if you are worried about that.

For some VWs and Audis you will need a 1/2" dr. 14mm or 17mm allen bit socket to remove the axle bolt depending on the engine (4 or V6).

with the 36mm you have, you can work on aircooled Volkswagens (Type I, III and IV). 46mm and later 48mm were used on the type II

Land Rover leafers and those with enclosed knuckles, 2-1/16". Deep well for the fronts to clear the u-joint or CV joint.

Any use a cheaper set like the HF of DIY use? I have a set of HF deep metric impacts that have held up pretty good for about 5 years now. The HF 7 piece set is only 32 bucks. Or are these sockets ones that the cheaper ones break because some axle nuts need a lot of torque to get off?

Are Wright chrome 3/4" drive 12 point ones deep enough (the shallow ones)?

36mm: GM,Jeep and Ford
34mm: GM and Chrysler
30mm: GM and Ford
32mm: Chrysler,Ford and Mitishubishi and some Hondas
The 1994 to 2001 Fullsize Dodge Ram 4x4 axle nut size is a 43mm although there is a special axle nut socket for this application.
I know VWs and Audis use 12 point axle nuts including newer Toyotas.A 12 point 1 3/16 socket works on VW and Audi axle nuts.

The rear axle nuts on my old Dana 60 and Timken axles are 2-3/8".

Many I take apart were worked on by the old farmer-mechanics who subscribed to the "git-er-done" with a hammer and cold chisel.

I used to see that a lot. Thank God I rarely see it any more.

Who uses a chisel and hammer to set bearing pre-load???
