So, as some of you may know I recently acquired a brand new KRL722A. However I am thinking about the future and I really think the deeper drawers is making me want a lista. Not to mention they are MUCH cheaper and seem to have a much better build quality to them.

With that said, can you completely customize them as far as drawer sizes, "banks" go?? Is there somewhere online to actually build one to your spec? I've been looking at toolboxesandmore.com and haven't really been thrilled by their designs as far as their "off the shelf" ones go.

Does anyone have any real-life pics they can show me? I've been scouring the net for the past few days and haven't really seen others besides a few.

Also, a couple of quick questions for the owners. How do you like them? Is it big enough for your needs? How are the locking systems? If you don't mind...how much did you pay? Where did you get yours from? Net, retailer?

Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Seach Lista on Ebay. There is a distributer who has tons listed on there. I hope BMWpower will chime in. He has a thread with lots of pictures and info. I have been thinking about getting some Lista since they are local to me. About 1/2 hour from my home/shop.

I have purchased a used Lista, Vidmar, Stanley Vidmar, Femco and a worn no name. Since thay were all used, I had no control over drawer configuration. I believe you can configure new ones any waY you like. As far as being better quality than Snap on Krl series, that is debatable with gool arguements on either side. I believe that speaks to the quailty of both!!

I like the thinner drawers 2 of my cabinets have but sometimes they are too thin. There always seems to be that one tool that belongs in a drawer with its brothers that is too tall. And it seems to me that no matter how well you plan, your storage needs will change over time so i don't think that magic configuration exists.

My advice is to buy with as much extra storage as you can afford at any given time and realize you will outgrow it or your needs will change over time.

I have three Lista cabinets and placed an order for two more on Friday. I used this web site to figure out what I wanted, but ordered mine from Griots Garage. Lista cabinets

A couple of times a year they have a 15% off sale and that makes them less expensive that others I looked at. Here is what I currently have,
workbench.jpg

the large center cabinet has 9 drawers as does the one on the far right, the other has 6 drawers. All are the 28 1/2 deep units which gives a net drawer depth of 24". They are the 39 3/8 height, I used no base under them, they rest on the Race Deck flooring. This is what I ordered the other day,
WC101

It is going to replace the old kitchen cabinets visible in the left side of the upper photo. I asked for the wooden top to have the square edge as opposed to the rounded edge supplied in the kit. I will position the new cabinets next to one another and have to top extend out to meet the corner of the existing bench. I have a piece of matching top to fill in the void and will make pull out trays to use the space under that. I will have a nearly 3' of open space for an area for a stool and some sit down work.

FWIW, check local craigslist and put in a standing order with your local used office furniture retailer/movers. One friend of mine got a Lista 4' wide, 4' high and 3' deep, drawers 3" deep, which had been used for storing maps. That all went digital and he got it for hauling it away.

Very nice Mr. 66Hertzclone. I would add a few small things: a magnifying glass, a pencil holder, and a small no parking place reserved for my one a day beer can.

Well done !

Thanks for the compliments, the pencils are in the top drawer of the far right cabinet, I've since added an electric sharpener, the handheld magnifying glass is in the small tray on the far left next to the tape dispenser. The frig is about 12' away, and coolie sleeves are in the freezer if it is a hot day. I think I've got it covered. :bounce:

My only regret for far in not using a trailer receiver to mount the vise. It would be nice to not have it in the way sometimes, and being able to place my grinder or buffer there when needed would be handy. Something for me to consider in the future.

You can build one to your spec on toolboxesandmore.com. Right on the front page, click "Build a Custom Lista Cabinet"

I got mine as a scratch and dent from Motorhead Extrordinaire (.com)
<<< check out their "Junk Yard".

It is the DW series with a single full width drawer at the top and 2 columns of drawers underneath. They will not make one with the full width drawer on the bottom... last time I looked. The one I have does not come up very often at a discounted price.

Lista doesn't have what many would consider to be a "typical" toolbox/rollaway drawer configuration. They don't have the glossy paint, either. But, there is a lot of metal in drawers and slides. The box is quite heavy.

I was quoted a fair price for a new custom configured box through Motorhead, but the scratch and dent came up. When I was quoted, there are added fees for things like a different color or two tone cabinet and drawers.

At least 15% discount off of list pricing. And, I use our corporate 3PL for great freight pricing.

So, what kind of discounts are we talking here? :headscrat

Snapped a couple iPhone pics this morning of mine. I picked mine up 5 years ago. An order was processed incorrectly at the factory and my client received Guardian Green. He ordered Beige. The single SC cabinet is next to my garage fridge. I have another leg and butcher block top to make another workbench when needed. Then I used (2) Lista workbench legs to create another work table. This one's on casters. Take the stereo off and it can be rolled out in the yard.

If I can help anyone with their Lista needs, feel free to contact me anytime.

Lista cabinets are totally modular. As long as the drawer heights match up to the housing, you can have any configuration you like. So, if you're looking at a SC900 cabinet, you just have to add up to 900 for the drawers. Here's a link to a catalog page showing different standard drawer configurations.

http://listaintl.com/assets/docs/combo_PDFs/SCcombos.pdf

I'm working with a GJ member and we've explored 4 different non-standard cabinet combinations

You mean, like this? http://www.mechanicstoolbox.net/

Found it in under 2 minutes.

Mine is similar to the one with the yellow drawers in the back left. They offer(ed) a configuration where the full width top drawer and base is actually one cabinet and not a couple of cabinets bolted together. It wasn't in the catalog or online when I bought mine. The yellow drawer cabinet in the picture is a DW cabinet on top of two SC cabinets on a single DW mobile base.

The full extension drawers are each >>rated<< at 400 evenly loaded pounds. You will never get that much rating out of a Snappy drawer... or anyone elses. I have a few drawers that have that much in them.

The Lista individual locking drawers are nice- you can't have more than one open at a time. I can have one drawer on each bank open the way mine is set up.

The configurations are not identical to or typical of what someone would think of as a mechanics toolbox. That doesn't mean that it won't work.

If you want function over form (or, rather flash) at a reasonable price, then Lista is the way to go.

Ooohhhh...

Good thing I don't have any more room. :bounce:

I have a DW/SC cabinet.

Here's a mobile DW/SC with an end wall cabinet (for manuals, cleaners & chemical storage). I think these were around a 1000 lbs each. I did a job for a Porsche dealership and provided one of these workstations for each of the shop mechanics.

If anyone is looking for Lista in the NY/NJ area, I have 50 of their cabinets and storage walls on display in various colors and configurations. I also stock over $10k in drawer accessories (dividers & partitions, plastic boxes, etc) and offer customers the opportunity of exchanging accessories (within 30 days of purchase) as they assess their storage needs.

That's exactly what i'm looking for in the DW. I am assuming I can configure my own drawers though...correct?

Get ahold of the cabinet catalog. All the standard drawer layouts are shown, plus the extra accessories. Dimensions, etc. are all there.

I would suggest laying out your tools/supplies in the configuration you want, then order accessories after the fact. That's what I did. You can measure and design as much as you want, but usually you don't get a feel for things until the cabinets are in front of you. This way you get just what you need and you don't get stuck with a bunch of left over (or not enough) dividers.

Good luck. PM me if you have any other questions...

I always recommend get the empty cabinet first and then order accessories. Dividers and such are only a 2-3 day lead time. Get a feel for your space in the cabinet and then fill it up.

Here's a shot of the combination cabinet when it debuted at the NADA show.

I find the 40" and 47" wide cabinets the most effective. Lista now has a full depth version of the 40" wide cabinet....actually they've had it for awhile but dropped the pricing on it significantly 3 weeks ago.

I've got some drawer configuration photos on my site at http://www.ultimategarage.com/storage/mw900-fac1.htm . I personally prefer using left to right partitions (cheaper to order a few of these with the cabinets to save on future freight costs) as it allows me to fit breaker bars and torque wrenches (typically over 24" in length) into the drawers. We sell Lista at really steep discounts and also have an exclusive deal with Lista for all of their blemished units. We call them our Junkyard Specials.

Joe Germann
www.motorheadextraordinaire.com

The "scatch & dent" items are a great value but are sold "as is". Paint issues, carriage failures, racked housings, key cylinders, etc would not be covered under Lista's lifetime warranty.

WE Lista, Vidmar owners (that are interested) still need need to find the best source for a drawer liner similar to the SNAP ON KRL product.

JONCO Ind will not / can not sell the S.O. liner, so I'm still searching for alternatives

Needing to know if installing misc LISTA or VIDMAR drawer divider pieces on top of 1/8" drawer liner will work ?? I would hope so

If anyone has done their homework, will you please share which LISTA dealer truly has the lowest cost (out the door) plus truck freight to the West Coast.

Thanks

If you use the dividers on top of the thinner drawer liner they would hold down the liner and keep it from scooting and bunching up. If I had a Lista, I would use a whole bunch of dividers.

These aren't my cabinets. Although I wish they were. Mostly Listas in this shop with a Kennedy and Waterloo mixed in. A couple Listas were supplied by OEM for tooling/replacement parts. My one I like the most is 36" W 30"D 36" T with 6" casters and a hardwood top.:)

Post #27 Above shows the mobile style that many members here would be interested in.

I was sent a LISTA Catalog (no #) that has a gray lightening bolt on cover over a three blue colored pattern. (??)

Anyway I can't easily see or find where you can configure the different cabinet footprints into/onto a mobile base. I'm thinking NW (16 7/8" wide) next to the MW (47" wide).

Anyway I hope the interest in this thread is kept front and center.

Thanks

Chuck, you'll need to work with a Lista distributor for configuration of custom combination cabinets. The catalog you have is the Lista Xpress Products brochure. That is Quick Ship items.
