Lista-What would you pay

I'm going to look at a Lista tool box tomorrow that seems to be in decent shape. These things are NEVER up for sale in my area. I've been told by the seller it is 40" wide 47" tall and 23" deep and they don't have the keys for it. What should I be looking out for and what would you consider to be a fair price?

Something about that doesn't look like Lista to me. Part of it is the color it's almost always gray. Still, something about the drawers don't look right. As I recall the drawer fronts were always flush with the frame in front, and those don't look flush.

Perhaps it's a different line that the industrial ones that we used to buy when I worked in a plant.

Edit: I just looked them up - they aren't flush, I must have been thinking of Vidmar.

I'm a little confused about the six casters. I don't see any single-bank carts on Lista's website like that. Hopefully, someone else can chime in that knows if that is an extra option or if the seller cobbled it together.

pretty sure it's a Lista but the wheels don't look right. The plates stick out past the bottom edges of the cabinet.

here's a pic from their website that shows the plates lining up with t he bottom edge. Maybe they changed casters or something. the handle looks to be correct however

looking at it closer though, what seems like a mis-alignment may just be a raised portion of the moble base.

Casters look to be somebodies add on's, along with the rubber bumpers. Handles do look similar to some online photos. Is that the original color, or brushed on semi gloss black?

If its a crummy picture and its actually in good shape, $600. If its scabbed together and not so nice, $400.

Im betting it's just someone's attempt at mounting casters and cheap paint job.
If the box and drawers are good, I wouldn't let how casters are mounted sway me buying it. I'd make some plate bases to mount the four caster properly,skip the two in the center.

The lock cylinder indicates Lista. I believe you can get cyl number and get a key from Lista.

I'm not a Lista expert, but I've seen enough to say I don't think that one left the factory looking like that. I'd only pay $500-$600 for one in that condition.

$525 and if you like 40" wide cabinet, those don't come around often. The common size on the used market is the 30" wide.

I'd pay 400 to 500bucks max if liked it enough and the condition good enough .
It's only real plus is the size .

It is a nice size for a tool box, but the casters are definitely not standard. I am more concerned about the lack of "waffle plates" under the casters. These are Lista factory stiffeners that keep the casters from punching through the bottom of the box when the box is fully loaded. See the Garage Journal link from Joe below (our resident Lista supplier and guru). On this size box the two waffle plates are mounted front to back. Lista provided casters are also higher grade.

The other missing item for a mobile Lista box are the drawer latches. On the current models you can easily add them and they are pretty cheap. They just snap in place on the right and/or left side of the handles.

I think $400-500 is a fair price IF it is great shape and not screwed up by the casters, etc., otherwise walk away.

That Lista box is jacked up. Don't buy it. It's not supposed to have casters attached directly to the bottom of the box. It's supposed to have a caster platform installed first and then the casters bolt to it.

Looks like you got some great replies. If the box itself is in good shape, no reason not to buy it if it's what you like. The price suggestions are in line in my opinion.
Like it has been said, redo the caster mounts either with the manufactures frames mentioned above or building your own plates that'll spread the weight out.
I built some for my older Listas. The main thing you want to do is spread the weight out front to back and the sidewall. The ones I made are about 6" wide 1/4" plate, mounted so the sidewall and the corners are bearing on the plate. I welded studs on the plate for the casters to mount to.

You'll be throwing 100bucks at it to sort castors and frame well .
If rest A1 I may give 400 bucks but ideally would want pay less due to fact fair bit of time to sort it nicely, if finish real **** I would only give 250bucks .

I think guys are making too much out of the casters, especially the weight perspective. It is highly unlikely that the OP will max out what the drawers will hold and the six casters will easily support use as a tool box IMO.

I have put casters under a number of Vidmar style boxes with out support plates or frames and have had no issues.

Of course it would make sense to look at how the casters are installed and make adjustments if necessary.

BUT, for once I think folks are giving too high an estimate as to price. To me, $400 is absolute tops and it would have to be in real nice shape. Hard to tell from the pic, but $250 to $300 would be better.

This is just my opinion and your need and wallet will dictate value to you.

If no rust at the bottom seems, if the rails the bearing roller ride on are not worn by abuse, if not major dent on sides/back, if there are some full length dividers included (one per draw adds support for large tool sets), $400-500 (going by major metro area pricing). Casters are user add-on , not adding any value, agree with Mr B as to casters, if replaced $100. 40" wide is nice for large tool sets. Top draws appear to be a good height size, bottom 3, I would rather have smaller drawers. Bring highest deep socket and socket tray to check useful draw height. If you can even get draw latches for older Lista's, I have them on one cabinet, royal pain in the A**; would only have them if I had young kids in the shop.

Don’t worry about the casters unless you absolutely need them. At the end of the day, it’s still a Lista cabinet. You can just pull the casters off and use it like it was originally designed. As long as it wasn’t majorly screwed up by the casters, should be no problem to use it without casters, like it came originally.

I haven't seen a Lista with the center casters like that and I don't think there needed. Listas are built as good or better than the truck brand and most of thier big boxes only have four casters. My Mac Tech 1000 is wider and four casters.

As the replys said, we think it's cobbled.

I looked at it tonight and decided to pass on it. The drawers were only 17.5" deep which isn't much better than the 44" Harbor Freight box I'm currently using. It had several scuffs and tiny dents. I didn't even bother asking about price, but the seller had it listed for $850. For those wondering, the casters were mounted to a thick piece of steel that ran from front to back.

Look at a new Storloc. The problem with a lot of used lista is they come out of industry and by the time they are out, they are often worn out.
