Lithion battery storage ideas?

I recently saw a YouTuber who lost his house to a fire caused by a rechargeable lithium battery used for a remote pool cleaner.
I have been reading how these batteries can internally short even while not being actively charged and catch on fire. Does anyone
store these batteries in a fire proof type storage or have any ideas on the subject? Thank you.

In the garage or basement I repurposed an old portable metal Craftsman tool box to store my power tool lithium batteries. Figured it will last a bit longer than a plastic box. But for the last 10-15 years nothing has sparked or leaked.

Lots of appliances can start fires, even ones without batteries. The person on the Tube lost their house due to a lack of smoke detectors, fire alarms, sprinklers, etc. If you are worried about fire, I would invest in things that cover all the bases vs. one little thing that might randomly happen.

BTW - I wouldn't believe anything you see or read on the internet, either.

Smoke alarms don’t help if you ain’t home when they go off. They sell bags specifically for lipo batteries.

Cheap lith ion batteries tend to be more susceptible to combustion.

I've seen reports of milwaukee batteries igniting as well.

Rechargeable Phillips Sonicare toothbrush on my bathroom counter a few years ago. Got up at 2:00am to go to the bathroom and walked into smoke filled bathroom. Granite countertop fortunately.

There was a house fire on this island this month caused by a failed low voltage lighting transformer in the crawl space. The smoke detectors did their job and saved the family; the house will need some repairs.

I can confirm that lithium batteries pose a huge fire hazard risk. December 20, 2020 a laptop computer in my garage started a fire spread to few Milwaukee batteries that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. Because I used fire rated drywall it didn’t spread to the second floor or the adjoining garage with a common wall nor my home.

I no longer use laptop computers. And I store all my battery operated tools without batteries. And put the batteries in a fire rated safe. Something like 1,500 degrees F for four hours. The chargers are located inside with the 120 volt power cord passing through rear side. A timer located outside the safe limits the chagrin’s time and shuts off the power.

I bought a timer, and plug my charger into the timer. When I charge batteries I set the timer for 2 hours. That reduces the risk if I forget to take the batteries out of the charger.

I made up a little steel cabinet with a fireproof backer and a built-in timer. I slap the batteries that need charging onto their bases and hit the button for a couple hours.

I also made up a timer outlet box to feed my Makita battery charger. 50 minutes seems to do the job. At least it is charging for a limited time, but maybe I also need a metal box to house them in instead of my wood wall cabinet. A steel wall cabinet? Would standard cement board used on walls for showers be a good insulating panel to put inside a steel cabinet?

That box is meant to keep fire out, not in.

Dictation is even worse. I'll use it for a text, and have to manually fix about half the words.

My mother exclusively does speech to text.

Its easier just to call her even for simple 2 sentence conversations

Yup lol

The real funny part is the whole circle of communication. Started with someone speaking, that was translated to Morse code, then translated to text, then went to some one speaking, that was translated to text for a telegram, then telephone let you speak directly, then you could type text through your phone, now it's back to some one speaking to their phone so the phone can translate it into text, and of course there are phones that can translate the text back to voice..

I've been toying around with the idea of a power tool storage and charging box. Double-insulated fireproof walls and a peltier cooling system so you don't have to worry about your batteries degrading when they sit all summer in a 120* workshop.
