Little advice on Jacobs chuck needed

Picked up a drill press with a pretty decent condition Jacobs 633c chuck. Hadn’t been used in some time. So I went to disassemble for a good cleaning and check the jaws. Instead of supporting the sleeve all the way around, I placed it in my vice supported by either side. You guessed it - fractured the sleeve.

They are no longer made, although they can be found. While googling I came across an article that said a sleeve from a 34-33would fit. Ordered one from MSC and it does NOT fit. So it’s going back.

So I guess my questions for those with greater experience is are there sleeves that WILL fit this chuck? Should I look for a good used one (same model) and keep the extra for spare parts? Is there another brand I should consider thats comparable? Or should I just eat the plate I cooked, and buy a new 34-33? Appreciate any thoughts as I’m so angry with myself I can’t think objectively. I'm surprised that it's smooth. The ones I've seen have the vertical stripes.

Oh, IIRC, the 34-33 was supposed to be a direct replacement for the 633c, but the parts aren't supposed to interchange. There's gotta be 30 years difference between the two models.

I believe it’s the first I’ve ever seen that was smooth as well. Even googled pics of that model to make sure it was legit Jacobs and not a knock off. First one I had seen with the screw on collar too

Wierd. All the Jacobs 633c chucks I have are smooth. If you want to find a replacement, another used option is the Supreme R6T33C. If you want new, consider:

I would just buy a new chuck. Good keyed chucks can be bought relatively cheaply.

Go on Ebay buy a used older chuck, definitely not a new chuck, they are not the same quality.

I agree that Ebay is the way to go since there are usually tons of them listed. (look for Jacobs "Hartford"). Also make sure the seller includes close up images of the jaws. If you're into keyed chucks, I'd be looking at a 14N ball bearing chuck as long as fitment is not an issue. You might also consider keyless like Albrecht.

I'd also throw a wanted ad on this site. This group probably has tons off older chucks laying around.

I never did find a replacement sleeve. Ended up finding a NOS chuck for about $90. Box looked 40 years old (or more) but the chuck inside was oily and shiny brand new. Informationally - you don't NEED a chuck with a collar, just needs to have the J33 taper. It will still work.
