little help on garage cabinets project

So I have some standard cabinets from lowes the inside of them is particle board with a laminated face. I am going to add a slide out self, and I am unsure how to attach to the particle wood that will be strong enough.

My plan is to add a 1x3 to each side to get the right spacing and then add slides to that that a boxed in shelf will ride on.

I don't know how to attach the 1x3's to the particle board that will hold it, I would assume that screws will pull right out.

Can you screw into the real wood from the outside of the cabinet? Going through the particle board into the 1x3. Also use some wood glue or construction adhesive.

Use construction adhesive and clamp until it is dry. If clamping is not an option, you could screw them to hold it tight while the adhesive dries. Just drill pilot holes first so you don't destroy the wood.

tipsy, there is likely no "real" wood on these janky cabinets from Lowes. He is just saying that the inside is bare particle board while the outside has a laminate on it. Probably 1/2" particle board junk.

Agree with both responses...screw from the outside AND use construction adhesive. I've installed these cabinets before. They do look pretty decent for what they are, but they don't give you anything extra to work with, that's for damn sure. I think this method will work just fine though.

I would substitute a piece of 1/2" plywood for the 1x3. Cut a piece of plywood to fit the insides of the cabinet from the bottom shelf to the middle shelf on each side. Attach the drawer slides to the plywood with nuts and bolts. You can cinch the bolts down tight enough that the nuts embed into the plywood. Then glue and screw the plywood into the sides of the cabinet. Run the screws from the outside of the cabinet into the plywood. If the tray is exceptionally heavy then use nuts and bolts to attach the plywood to the cabinet.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Particle board cabinets are not very strong, so unless the slide outs are only going to store light stuff, I'd definitely beef it up.

I would've skipped the store bought particle board cabinets and custom made my own out of solid wood. Only particle board I'd use would be for the doors, but I'd probably use solid wood panels for those too.

Could run vertical 2x4's up to under the cabinets to hold up the bottom of the cabinets and the slide outs, then build shelves on those. However that would cut into your floor space and would look clunkier. My stepdad custom built a huge wall of shelving with doors on one side of his garage. It really swallows up a ton of stuff -- tools, supplies, household stuff, camping gear, etc..
