You could do this on a plate of glass too, its just a convenient spot where it landed here but DA paper stuck down is ideal for sanding flat. My guy actually milled a small engine head like this in a few minutes and we needed to fix a valve seat the other day and my helper jumped at the idea of running down to the neighbors to put it on the lathe, I said,,, wait, handed it back to him for installation in a minute.

I actually use it fairly often. I cut some shims from sheet the other day and smooth them after.

I have a couple of pieces of plate glass around for doing this, I like the glass for use with wet paper.

I keep a piece of 1" thick aluminum extrusion just for this purpose.
