Even at my age you sometimes learn good things...
I've had lots of garages & garage doors, all garage doors make noise. The one in this house was 35 years old, mounted directly under our bedroom, & made so much noise that I wouldn't use it till my wife was up. Well, the other day my wife, as they so often do, came in & told me "the garage door just makes noise, but doesn't move". A quick look told me the motor was dead & not worth repair/replacement.
Not a big deal, I'd been wanting to replace the whole thing for a while. Off to HD, & for $200 we walked out with a new Genie belt drive opener. While we were there I looked at some nylon rollers, but decided to wait.
A couple of hours in the evening & the old opener is down & the new one on the ceiling. It was late so I called it quits & left wiring/programming for the next day.
Mid-morning all that was done & the new opener opened & closed the door somewhat more quiet than ever before. ****, it still made plenty of noise, so I ran back to HD & got the nylon rollers. A quick easy job putting those on & the noise was down to one loud grind & a bunch of squeaks. The grind was a roller shaft hitting the curve in the track. Easy to adjust. After that my wife was impressed with how quiet the door was & commented on being down to "just a few squeaks". I grabbed a can of spray lube, lubed all the hinges & ran the door up & down a couple of times. The wife couldn't believe how quiet the whole thing became! It's almost as scary quiet as the mini-split in my shop! Guess you should lube those doors every 35 years or so, eh?...
Next on my list is a set of nylon rollers for my shop door. It's 9 years old & chain operated. I don't expect it to be as quiet as the belt drive, but rollers & some lube & it might not disturb sleeping guests in the room above it.
All in all, one of those homeowner repair/replace jobs that had some very positive results. I'm a happy guy!........
