Local amendments

There is probably as much hearsay about this as there is about code in general, especially anymore as its more complicated and local does not have the expertise to fuss with the highly researched NEC.

I am not real current but I pass inspection, I havnt looked or studied but cant think of one thing that is added. The counter people at local hwds and lumber yards are great disseminators of codes. I got one is a friend, tried to help him with the stock etc, get panels with correct spaces etc but its pointless.

Some states accept the NEC 100% as is, while other states will modify parts of it. Here's one example - this is a link to a multi-page pdf file that describes the various changes or edits the state of Wisconsin makes to the 2011 NEC (they haven't gone to the 2014 version yet.)

Sometimes, changes are made on a more local basis, such as the deal in Chicago where they aren't allowed to use nonmetallic cable and have to use conduit instead. I've also had local inspectors demand things on their own that were above and beyond Code in their area (although that doesn't mean they were right to do so, but sometimes it's easier to do what they say instead of trying to fight the system.)

The point is, the rules can be and are different all over the US, so any advice provided on a free website is worth what you pay for it. It's always a good idea to verify actual requirements for a particular locale.

The code is written by suppliers of electrical product. More research is done for the code by lawyers and marketers than electricians.

There is some influence from marketing and no one likes change, grounding and gfci were scoffed at. But the code is a pretty concise document, lots of forensics, lots of input, some looking forward. I may be wrong but more of the local is being phased out all the time. Most changes are not sweeping or fundamental anymore.

Also,,, I never said some didn't make up their rules as they went, inspectors etc but in my case don't know of any local amendments, are there any in Michigan?

A rumor had it NYC was going NEC as well as Chicago. I don't know, don't care but lots of places been shedding dead weight.

It appears Michigan is using the 2011 NEC but also has some differences for one and two family dwellings.

This adoption affects all structures in the state except for one and two family dwellings. The standards contained in the 2011 NEC, except sections 110.24, 501.30B, 502.30B, 503.30B, 505.25B, 506.25B, 547.1 to 547.10, and Annex H, as published by the national fire protection association (NFPA), shall govern the installation, replacement, alteration, relocation, and use of electrical systems or material.

It's mostly lawyers that make the codes change,because everyone sues everyone for anything. So now it's cover your *** stuff and codes for people with no common sense. Around here we are up to 2011 code and they are working on adopting part of the 2014 code with arc fault ****.

All except one and 2 family, I didn't read the details but as I said for common work as it pertains to this forum in general I bet they are far and few.
