local source for purlins?

I want to replace the purlins on my lower side and then cover it with channel similar to the way the high side was done. To do it I need 4 10 foot long 6x2 cee purlins and 4 foot long 6x2 channels. anyone know any steel building supply stores in central FLA?

They are the cross strips used for installing metal roof panels on top steel building roof supports. Similar to furing strips used for support for drywall on 24" oc on ceilings.

I have to say the same thing. Over the years, I've learned alot here simply by reading and paying attention. Sometimes however, you are left in the dark, and this is one of those times. I know what purlins and girts are, and anyone with access to this forum can Google and find out for themselves, buttttt...... its nice to at least give a little bit of explaination, or backstory, so that its clear what you need to know.

The OP leaves me wondering..... he says that if he had to explain what a girt and a purlin is, then we still would not know where to purchase them, but if he knows, why doesn't he google 'steel building manufacturers" and find one.

Of course I did google it but they want to sell the whole kit and not locally to central fl, my roof kit was shipped from MS. Maybe Im wrong and if so I apologize, but the tone of the second post seemed wrong to me, it was not asking it was being critical about not explaining what purlin is, had he simply said "whats a purlin?" i would likely have been more apt to answer in kind

I think its a matter of being a little more complete with your post (the original one). Something more like, "I have this metal building, and it has C channel girts and purlins in it that are x by x inches and x gauge steel (the gauge should all be imprinted on the existing steel) and I need to replace a couple of sections due to (damage, rust, modifications, etc) and I'm having trouble locating a supplier of components for steel buildings."

I would say rburke and the little cowboy are perfectly free to use Google themselves or failing that even post their own question in the forum rather than expect others to automatically do their homework for them. To me their comments are a symptom of our 'entitlement' or 'me-me' society. I don't think the responsibility for educating anyone falls on the OP. A little work with the local yellow pages and the phone may have answered the OP's question but then maybe he had tried that and was drawing a blank. Sometimes it takes a second head to provide a spark, oh-shi*, search term, or idea when things get frustrating or we just run out of leads.

thanx guys. The locals I called didnt want to fool with 4 peices, they pass through sell the kit and arent geared for peicemeal.. Ill try the links above on Monday. The Orlando link answered on saturday but couldnt tell me if they could get them.

My intent was not to have others do the google search, Ive done that, although I didnt think to search "carports", I was hoping someone local has already bought some from someone and they could just say, yea I had the same problem and these guys were great. I could find 1000 roofers on google, but if someone says this guy did my roof 10 years ago and my sister's roof last year I would be more prone to call them than 100 google leads I had to vet

I know what is a purlin. When the OP said he/she wanted to replace a purlin "on my lower side" the first question I had is...."on the lower side of what"? Not real clear. But then the OP really makes it all clear by saying......"similar to the high side".......ahhh....how dumb of me! I should have ran and Googled "lower side" and "higher side".
And to Torque1st.....you certainly assume a lot! I didn't ask you or the OP for enlightenment or an education. I just said I had no idea of what he asked and possibly others as evidence by the fact that 12 hours had past without a comment to his posted question.

If nobody stocks individual parts outside of a complete package most metal shops that sell AG or commercial building siding/roofing etc could shear and bend those shapes easy enough from flat sheets of galvanized or coated stock.

Any siding/roofing manufacturer should be able to tell you who distributes their product in your area.

Locally I go to the Tin Man here in KC. He stocks some trim but he can bend up anything I need.

Im thinking that may be my only chance right now. Its made from smooth galvanized or galvalum so I can get sheets. It might be tricky to get 10Ft but maybe they will have it on rolls. I will try some searching on HVAC and Tin guys. These peices are trim only and will be doubled up so it should be OK if the steel is not as high a grade.

10 foot is easy. That is a standard nominal length. The flat stock is actually a little longer to allow for overlap. Many shops are set up for bending long lengths for trim.

Be prepared for sticker shock. Metal goods and materials are way expensive due to worldwide demand. I always hoped the recession would bring the prices down due to lower demand but it has not happened that I can see.

Unless I am missing something I think the shapes you are looking for are run of mill shapes produced by light gauge steel manufacturer's such as "ClarkDietrich", "MarinoWare" and such. These are two of the bigger names in the industry. You may be able to call them and get the name of a supply house in your area. Those shapes are used all the time for framing exterior/interior walls for commercial office buildings and such.

ClarkDietrich web site with tab for studs. Another tab there for "tracks" (aka as light gauge "C").
