I am planning on in-floor heat for a future planned garage build (about 1100sf). It has been suggested that I add a small room in the garage to contain the boiler.

I wasn't planning on a mechanical room and I would lose floor space flexibility if one were there. My thought was that the boiler simply be against the wall but maybe there are factors I hadn't considered.

For those of you with these in-floor systems, did you put them in separate rooms? Are they typically noisy or large that they need a dedicated room? Can any of you post pictures of your "boiler corner"?

Add a mechanical room on the outside?

I know I can't spare any space in my shop either.

In part, it will depend upon what type work you are doing. If you are doing a lot of woodworking or grinding, dust becomes a factor. You do want to protect the system and you do want to be able to get at it for maintenance. If you put it into a confined space you had better direct vent it as you will end up with combustion air problems if you do not. The simple solution is to make the space (about 1200) sq ft;)

The space is for vehicle storage and very light mechanical work. Not an industrial space.

The suggestion didn't make sense to me as the boiler seemed like a component that didn't need to be separated from the rest of the space. But I wanted to see how others have installed their systems in case I wasn't understanding it correctly.

Condensing gas boiler will need a condensate drain so that may factor in. I enclosed my electric panel and radiant boiler in a small closet attached to an exterior wall to protect it and help prevent fumes from getting to it.

My shop has a small mechanical room, maybe 6 or 8’ x 8’ or so housing the wall hung boiler, electrical panel, 80 gallon air compressor, small water heater, condensate pump, and some 2’ deep shelves and pegboard for plumbing and electric work, spare boiler circulatory, shop supplies, car cleaning supplies, etc.

All that stuff has to go somewhere anyway, and the walls muffle the air compressor noise. The shop has 16’ ceilings, and the mechanical room is 8’, so I also gain a storage mezzanine and staging area for sheet metal for my pre war Fords.
