Just wondering, when people register, if you can force them to put in a location. If it's in the US, a state will do, in Canada, a province...but so we have some idea. That's one of the most frustrating things on here...when people post but there's no location. Members have been getting better about that, but we still have a lot that don't fill that out.

Which leads me into my second question...can you enable the member's list to be searched by more than just letter of the alphabet? It would be useful to be able to search by location...I'd like to invite more people into the group I started, Greater Atlanta GJ members...and that would be easy if I could query the member list by people in Georgia.

Also, searching by most recent activity, maybe post count, seniority date...all these would be useful to some extent.

The new board looks great!

Your beating a dead horse. Everyone seems to think that someone is going to jump out of the computer screen and steal their tools. I am beginning to believe that we have more than our share of village idiots some days. I think that an IQ test might be more appropriate....

I don't think it should be mandatory; this is the internet after all and some people feel the need to remain anonymous when they're shy or scared. :D

Is narrowing down to state or province really that invasive? :headscrat

I think Junk's right...some people are paranoid. But heck, even Old Car Guy has his state listed...and I'd bet there's no one on here with more tools and equipment than him.

I personally had not originally post my location because we are moving. Well we are on year two of moving so it is a bit hard to say I will be there but for now I am here. I finally thought about it and do just that and put both in.

I was a moderator on discussdiy.com before they merged with diychatroom.com. It always amazed me on how people would ask region type questions with out saying were they were from?? From frost line to wiring. Plumbing in the uk seems to many time use non pressurized hot water systems that I have never seen and of course no 110 vac most areas overseas ether although the basic panels seem to be wired the same just at the higher voltages. Besides questions on insulation or roofing. What type of climate urban or rural area.

I don't think it is necessary for everyone on a board to input there location. But I do think it makes for a more friendly and simpler time trying to relate to and answer questions.

After reading this thread I went into the user cp and put in my location. I know how annoying that can be not knowing where someone is from when they post.

I regularly hang on three forums only one of them has a somewhat mandatory location deal . You dont put your location in you CP or put something stupid in its place and you will be reprimanded . I have my location on all 3 forums . I dont see any reason not to put it up there but there are plenty of reasons to put it up there especially if you bothr to ask questions which might actually make your location relavant :D. All 3 forums are shop or hobby related and all 3 have peaple asking questions every day that cant be answered if we dont know what fricken planet your on . I am more worried about some local idiot breaking in and stealing my toys than I am about somebody driving here from Cali and trying to figure out which house is mine just from things I have said or pictures I have posted . This also relates to peaple blacking out their tag numbers when they post pictures of their vehicles ( Peaple if you drive the dang car I can assure you other peaple have seen your TAG number Oooooooooooh the horror .

I think the only thing I do not like about the whole "You must identify your exact location" thing is that it comes off pushy, and a bit **** retentive to me. Mind you I do not see it as a security issue or anything like that, I just hate people cramming **** like that down my throat. It is kind of like seat belt use, I know it is good for you, but it is some more of no ones business if I strap my big *** in the seat of my truck!

For some reason I equate it to the idea of a home owners association, Which I loathe with a white hot passion. If I had tons of money and could live in the most prestigious community I would never dream of doing so. I would not want a bunch of SOB'S telling me what I could and could not do to and with my property. If that is your thing great, but it ain't mine. I understand all the do gooder logic behind them and the basic premise and all, it is just not a line I would ever swallow myself.

In the end I guess I like to swim against the current a bit. Nope, don't like folk throwin down the gauntlet. or tempting me to cross lines. Just one of my many faults.

I agree with you, Buck. I absolutely hate the whole idea of HOAs. I understand why they exist, but still don't like them. Having another layer of government to tell me I can or can't plant a tree, paint my house a certain color, whether or not I can have more than two cars in the driveway....hell no!

I'm pretty happy where I am, but if I had stupid money, I'd be out on 10+ acres out in the country!
