any ideas of how to open it? Googled around for tricks and techniques including one involving a piece of thin gauge sheet metal between drawers to try to trigger lock mechanism.

Locking mechanism is still engaged, so drawers won't open. Lock is out (and I presume the washer that holds the lock to the front is still in the top drawer.

I can't re-engage the bar that is (I think) perpendicular to the front.

Truck guy is retired and fishing/riding motorcycles down in Mexico (good for him!)

Thought of calling a locksmith as a last resort. I've had the box for years, and it's still got a really nice finish, so I want to be careful with it if at all possible.

Attached to my house as most are.... Lol
I don't know if you were around in the 90's but back then you pulled the mat off the top of the box and at the rear there were plates screwed or riveted in that you'd remove then you could stick a little tool in there like a pick or something and you could lift the main holddown rod.

Maybe check on google and search something like snap on toolbox collector forums as they're out there.

You can google the number for snap on and they can help you get in it I'm sure.

IF you have a model tag on the back google how to open such such model snap on toolbox without the key and you'll probably find something as well.
