I used powdered graphite on locks for years with good results. But it was no help on my truck recently. This 3 in 1 lube worked in less than a minute. I had been looking for Tri Flow but no one close by had it. This will now be my go to for locks.

I began using this one about 6 years ago. The west and south facing doors get roasted by the sun so this stuff keeps them working smoothly.

please please please do not use graphite, unless you enjoy giving your locksmith extra money.
we use Houdini/Super Slick Stuff for general lubrication & cleaning, and Tri-Flow for high security locks that have more moving parts.
Had a locksmith tell me that graphite just gums up the mechanism. He said even WD40 was better to use in locks.

some manufacturers still use a small amount of graphite in new locks, which is OK for a while. If you use a small amount WHICH NOBODY DOES you will be ok. Instead, customers pack the locks full of graphite and then spray lube. All of my shirts are permanently stained black.

Yuck!

Online there remain enough sources advocating using WD-40 or graphite. Someone told mom-dad to use graphite in their lock and it did work for a bit but all the buildup was pretty messy. The knob cutout became a depository for the graphite and it stained the door. I recall going in to change out a knob set and that graphite impregnated my hands, clothes as well on the floor. (Good thing it was a tile floor. Had it been carpet...messy stuff.)

Or better yet, get that goopy graphite impregnated mess all over your house key, and drop it into a purse, pocket, on the carpet. Mudd is a polite name for what they will be calling you.
