Lockdown workshop project from Austria

Good evening Folks,

My name is Christoph, I just turned 25 and work as a design engineer in a company that builds fire engines and equipment. I’ve been a long time reader on the forum. Finally the time has come to show you my hopefully soon to be presentable workshop.

So me, my brother in law and another good friend set out to find a workshop to rent over two Years ago. Unfortunately there were a lot of ups and downs, you really can’t rely on people’s words nowadays. Nevertheless we found a workshop only two minutes away from where I live. It still is a diamond in the rough but we’re excited to make it our own and begin the remodelling process.

It’s dimensions are 7,5 metres by 11,5 metres with two barn-style gates on the long side of the building. Here is a picture of the plan I drew up quickly.



And here are some pictures when we first visited the space (I’m the skinny guy in the short shorts)







So that’s all thus far. I hope I don’t make too many mistakes writing in English. I hope you’ll enjoy our journey and stay tuned for our upcoming projects. There are a lot of things planned including a loft- space, a two post lift install, electrical work and cladding the inside with OSB.

Well I’m already back with the first update. Thanks for the kind words, I hope you enjoy the process.

So the first thing we are going to adress before winter is fixing the old concrete floor. It’s very thin in several places and needs to be thicker in order to set up our two post lift in the near future.

So the first step was to tear up a part of the existing slab:











We hauled off several cubic metres of concrete. So the next step was to get the reinforcement for the slab. We use two mats AQ60 (6mm rod diameter mat), and laid a H-Pattern where the lift stands with 12mm rebar. Of course all is connected to one another with wire.





So the next step is going to be concrete. We gotta work fast in order finish the slab before the temperatures drop too far.

One thing I also did was to play around with paper cutouts on how to arrange the cars to fit 3 of them and still have access to the lift area (two squares are the lift posts).

Looks good! Should utilize a respirator though, silica is no joke!

Also, love the Rosenbauer stuff I don’t live too far from the Rosenbauer plant here in the states. They make awesome machines and know a few people that work there. Cool stuff.

Yes, don't work without lung protection, rated for the work you are doing. Actually, that should be for all your PPE Personal Protective Equipment. Assuming your background, I'm surprised that you worked like that.

I'm a retired firefighter/paramedic, a lifesafety inspector and fire service instructor. One of the reasons I'm still-around is the care I took in using my SCBA and other PPE, and the knowledge I gained from always studying, what to-do and how to-do it. I have many co-workers who began after me who are deceased, and there's always a component of service-related health issues when someone dies early.

Anyway, looks like your reinforcement is going well. Get that poured!

Yeah you´re absolutely ight, should have been more persistent on using a mask. Will do better next time - promised! We still have a lot to learn in Life.
