Hey guys. Looking for a 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 locking extension set. Not looking to spend a ton. I see neiko makes some on amazon. So does sk. Sunex. Gear wrench. Any suggestions?

I love my SK locking extensions. I don't know what spending "a ton" is to you, but they'll be the priciest of the brands you mentioned. I'd look at Tekton over Neiko.

Get the ones with the collar, not the button. Lock wobbles are pretty handy too.

I got this set from Neiko.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001JGTFAA/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It works ok, except a set screw came loose on the collar.
Fortunately, I found it and put it back with some thread locker on it. That fix the problem.

the one from HF had the same issue. i bought one couple years ago and i had to do the samething. wonder if there the same extensions. they have the same black collar as well.

Yes, thank you very much, that's above and beyond. If I had to buy one or the other and the price differences were minute, I'd get impact. I will check all those out. Thanks again.

One catch I've noticed for lock on drives is that it's good to be able to test them in person (at least for 1/4 inch). I was looking at some long extensions with handles, but the socket would slip off if I pulled hard enough or at a sharp angle. The problem there is if you can't reach the end at that point, you couldn't get the extension back on the socket. I'd rather have a non locking one for that matter, or a longer socket (got a 10 inch extended depth one for truck wheels so I could grab it farther back and clear longer studs inside, not 1/4 inch of course, just saying).

I got this one from Wera.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003GDIRP8/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It has a free rotating sleeve, a push pin to lock (green) and unlock (red).

I'd like to buy more, but it's more costly than the Neikos I have.
The Neiko with collar can sometimes be knock out accidentally when I put this in a toolbag straight down/up, but this Wera push-pin is more stiff and doesn't come lose accidentally.

Check out cripe distributing on ebay. They've had Armstrong locking extensions in chrome and impact off & on.

Current Proto & SK are probably my favorites.

I agree, the collar type has the best lockability with different brands of sockets, but with the 1/4 drive the collar might be too big to get in some tight quarter situations.

Honestly 1/4 and 3/8 are all you will need for locking extensions 1/2 you will rarly if ever need a locking extension

I know blue point and Matco make 6 piece locking 1/4 impact extension. Set that is great an Armstrong 18-940 is the original part but apex may have discontinued or on back order like a lot of Armstrong tools now

I do want the locking collar type. I have both craftsman chrome as well as grey pneumatic sockets, i don't know if that makes a difference as far as where the detent ball sits on the extensions. I'd like to find all drive sizes because i do find myself using 1/4 and 3/8 the most lately. The 1/2 would just be for uniformity... i know we all suffer from it! I don't know whether to go for chrome or impact. The three sets are so expensive. I'd do the HF one, but they don't have 1/4 locking. Neiko has the push button ones in 1/4 but i've read elsewhere as well as here to get the collar type. Gearwrench for the price doesn't provide enough varying length. I'd like a set that does 3/6/10 or whatever it is. The HF does 3/6/10/18 which is awesome, in chrome.

If you buy SK don't buy the old style with the roll pin. Look on eBay I bought chrome Armstrong's 1/4 and snap on 3/8 sets cheap. Just took a while

I currently have sk, craftsman, grey pneumatic and Tekton extensions. The Tekton are the wobbles. What happens with non quality extensions? I've never broken one.

Do they make pin detent extensions? And if so, would they be sold in a set and cheaper than collar type locking extensions? If not, MAKE THEM SOMEONE! lol.

Non QR Locking pin extensions are inexpensive readily available on e-bay. Look under cooper/apex or snap on industrial finish. They are a bit of a hassle to use versus QR locking type.
