locking wheel nuts

I know that I have seen in the past a kit that has virtually all the various designed locking wheel nut sockets but I am at a loss for the proper key words to use on-line.

Id rather stay away from the kit that sort of grips the outside of the wheel lug and turns it off by chewing into the outer diam. of the lug.

I am looking for the master kit that has the various most popular sockets that will allow me to remove and re-use the locking lug without any damage to the locking lug.

Any suggestions?

The "master kit" only covers tuner style wheel locks. They don't cover the Mcgard style.

Anyone think these things ( locking lugs) are worth the effort to use ?

I used to leave them on when the dealers installed them ( to grab some profit no doubt) but now I think any thief will have no trouble in getting around them, so I no longer use them to avoid the look and inconvenience - am I wrong?

no you're not wrong. Autozone sells, for $9, a socket that will grab the outside and remove any lugnut or stud. maybe back in the day, but today with cordless impacts so prevalent, the lock is only going to cause trouble for the owner when he gets a flat and can't find the darn tool...

besides, who steals stock rims anymore anyway? like radios, when's the last time someone stole your pioneer supertuner?

I bought this set: http://www.tooltopia.com/steelman-7...CRVy0S_Im2axdtX7q5c8jmEGGwLU4S80byBoCWyXw_wcB

it is really nice and covers most mfgr's, (not tuner ****) but did not work for me. I needed 11 point internal for a VW...every size but that...had to use the outside universal type to get it off. VW's ****...

I have yet to see a factory locking lug nut that will work with that kit. Sans some European stuff

That stuff is all tuner and aftermarket stuff. Dealers generally install mcgard style which that kit doesn't cover

mcgard you can get at the parts store or junkyard.

yeah that kit will do a lot of the euro stuff, but not quite all.

the Steelman 75032 will do Ford and GM I believe...no experience with that one though.

Someone stole the OE chrome 20s off of an Explorer that was a total loss at the collision shop I work at about 2 months ago. Suspected to be an employee, but couldn't prove it

Pioneer indash disc player 83 Malibu wagon, 2008....same lot. Guess removing the faceplate wasn't any help. They did do a nice job of breaking a next to impossible to find power vent glass, and destroying the dash, though:sad:

Last time I left my "extra" car at work outside overnight.

Some a-hole stole the $20 Sparkomatic (K-Mart) tape deck and some truly horrible Realistic (Radio Shack) speakers from my Geo Metro (well, you know...) years ago when it was at the body shop. Broke the window and bent the door to get, basically, cheap dog ****.

I'm not a thief or a crackhead, so I guess I'll never understand the mindset. But basically, they'll steal absolutely anything.

Took the ones off of my camry by pounding a 3/4" 12 point socket and using a breaker bar. Worked great and now I have normal lugnuts. I did have to use a press after removing each one to get them out of the socket.

Air chisel with a sharp flat bit. Spin right off.

A couple years ago I bought a little Suzuki Samurai with only 20k one owner miles to use on the farm and the original owners had put keyed anti theft nuts on each wheel. They lost the key. Thank goodness the wheels are shallow enough I could getva pipe wrench on them. Replaced all of them with regular lug nuts. They aren't worth the effort, if someone wants your wheels bad enough they'll steal them.

I have a co-worker who had is 2002 Camaro stolen the only thing they didn't take were the very desirable Zr1 style wheels. He had installed Mcguard Locks in place of the factory junk.

I have a snap on kit that removes the old style Mcguard type locks.
It is basically a very smooth, mildly tapered socket that you drive over the lock.
Because it is smooth it leaves the lock lug like new. No chew marks.
It works very well. I used them when I did State Inspections, It was faster than trying to find the key in the customers car.
I have no experience with the tuner style.

Yep have same set. Surprising thieves dont have it too!

As for the tuner lugs, they arent anything special really. Just 12pt socket, most cases a 15, 16 or 17mm 12pt will fit them hahah. If they dont you just go to town with a 12pt socket that is tight.

If someone wants your wheels they are gonna figure out a way to take them and no locking lugnut is gonna stop them.

Damn you must work in a shady place.

Across from an airport, on a corner of 2 main streets, between a couple of residential neighborhoods.

Problem is that the apartment ghetto is less than a mile away...you know the ones, nice places 20-25 years ago, but older now with ever devolving caliber of tenants.

I will say, been there almost 11 years, and these are the only 2 incidents we've had.

Shop I worked at before (10 years) only had 1 attempt. They pulled a head unit out of a camaro, and left a Crown Royal bag 1/3 full of quarters laying in the lot. The bag had some blood on it, did I mention we had 3 Chow Chow dogs that roamed the lot at night? Yep, male had dried blood on his nose. Guess he made a big enough impression that they decided to leave in a hurry.
