Loft Framing Question

Recently my mom had a local contractor build a 24x40 garage for her.

The original plans called for a 6/12 pitch roof, but she requested a 9/12 so that we could also put a loft in above the garage. The contractor worked w/ a local truss builder and we had loft rafters fabricated.

After building was complete, the framers added bracing in the loft area attaching the gables to the rafters. They said something vague about this being used to support the trusses.

Is there anyone that can shed light on if these braces are actually needed?

We intend to put 3/4" ply down for a subfloor, insulating the roof and adding sheathing to walls inside the loft area, so I would think that what we plan to add would greatly improve upon what the frames did.

Required gable bracing can be found on the truss engineering sheet, either for this particular gable truss or a generic gable bracing detail. This paperwork should be included with your truss package. Typically any vertical web longer than about 5 feet needs some type of added support. I typically add a 2x4 edgewise to each vertical web creating an L shape, on long webs maybe one brace on each edge of the web.

Great, thanks! I will talk to my mom about the paperwork for the rafters.

Going back and adding a perpendicular 2x4 to each of the vertical sections would be much easier, and would work w/ what we've got in mind for trying to finish off the loft area.
