I am wanting to build a loft in my existing garage. It will span 12 feet wide x 21 deep. I'm thinking ledger boards lag screwed to wall studs with joists spanning across 12' on 16" centers. I'm not sure about joist dimensions. And will joist hangers carry the load? I will be using it for household storage, folding tables and sporting goods. I have also attached some pictures.

We built a loft in our garage for extra storage. 8'x22' 2x12 on16" center. One roof to loft "T" support to the ridge bean at 4' and one at 8' 1/2" plywood floor. You can see we are storing plenty of stuff in there...We used stringer hangers...

We ran 2x12 ledger boards around our outside walls, lag bolted to the studs (16oc), and then hangers with 2x12's in them spanning 22'. We have like 8' of the back of the garage done, and we also ran a couple of 2x4 posts up to the rafters. Ours is holding some serious weight, so depending on what you need, you could definately scale it down. Its holding up a ton of car parts
how much are you planning to do? your post makes it sound like you're going to do the whole garage or something, so just remember that you won't have enough height to stand up in there, so take that into consideration

Well that sounds easy enough. My biggest concern is if the joist hangers are made hold. My neighbor built 8' walls instead of ledger boards to put the joists on. but the problem is he lost a little square footage and maybe paid for walls he really does not need. I'm thinking 2x6 or 2x8. Actually the post by darkk has the picture I was talking about. Thats our loft in our smaller garage that is basically a big storage shed. Its holding the weight just fine, have bins and bins of heavy car parts, bike parts, and even some drywall and wood up there
