I am building a 40x60x16 pole barn and plan to add a 12x40 loft. I had planed to floor it with 3/4 T&G OSB subflooring. With how much lumber has gone up recently I'm looking for ways to cut costs. I have the opportunity to get 3/4 plain plywood for about $20 a sheet less that OSB but it won't be T&G. how important is the T&G for a storage space with 16" joist spacing?

Do you have a router? If so, rout a 1/4" slot about 1" deep all around your plywood wherever it meets another piece of ply, and glue in a strip of 1/4" plywood. Instant T&G.
Yes, it's fairly important because some of your joins will be across the joists and unsupported. Splines will greatly reduce the bouncyness when stepping near those unsupported edges.

Today's socalled 1/4" ply is thinner, but a 1/4" slotting cutter is really .250", so use Liquid Nails for subfloors for your glue so it wll fill up the joint and take the slop out.

Just add blocking where the joints don't fall on the framing. I think that's how it was done anyway before the T&G short goods came along.

Good way to use those scraps also.

That is a good solution, I will need some blocking between joists anyway.
