Loft

Hello everyone. This is my first post here so if it’s in the wrong spot please let me know.

I’m looking to build a loft in my shop. I’ve seen people doing similar ideas using thread road from the purlins on the roof but was looking for something stronger as I want to make it a little bigger. My current idea is a 10’x20’ loft. The loft will hang from the main ibeam truss on the end closer than run 20’ to the wall where I could have a support post coming from the ground against the back wall. Would something like this be possible? I drew in red my thoughts on the bracing.

Welcome.

I would never hang something like that from a truss without an engineer's involvement and my preference would be something supported by posts anyway. 10x20 plus all the stuff on it is a lot of weight

Unless you know the frame was designed for those concentrated loads, proven by an engineers drawing, don't do it.

I would use pallet racking for that type of building. No load on the structure.

I think 10 feet is too deep a shelf
you will have a hard time getting to stuff that gets shoved to the back
even 5 feet would be a problem
I would scale it down to 3 feet
that will make stuff easy to reach and keep the weight problem manageable

Yeah, pallet rack might be better for storage unless you need to spend time there, and you can take it with you later.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t want to put any pallet racks unless I have to. Trying to keep stuff off the ground that won’t be used much. I’ll probably consult an engineer before building anything. Was just hoping someone had done it similar to avoid that.

Correct, engineered along with the 1 ton hoist. However, his building appears to be red iron with heavy I-beam construction like mine. It should support significant loads near the edge as he has drawn.
