Log splitter motor swap, need advice

I recently built a log splitter and used a Tecumseh engine. Long story made short, motor ran like **** and I swapped and put a Honda 160cc GC I a had taken off a pressure washer. Here is the question. I was able to govern the old engine using a throttle (like a lawn mower). The Honda is preset and runs at the same RPM when cranked. This would be fine except when the hydraulics go over relief it chokes the motor down. This did not happen with the old engine. My first thought was it did not have enough power, but after looking at Northern Tool log splitters many of them are offered with a 160cc Honda engine. This leads me to believe it has to be some way the governor is set up. Any ideas how I could change this or does anyone know where I could post this question to get an answer.

You need to check the specs on the hydro pump. I bet you are running it well above its max RPM.

What kind of pump it on it?

I will check the pressure. It may be above the rated RPM, but I don't think so. The Honda seams to be running about the same RPM as the Tecumseh. The Honda has a stiff spring connected to the linkage where a throttle cable would mount. I was wondering if I took the spring off and made it stationary if it would work? Thanks for the replies. I am out of town this week, but will check when I get home.
