I remember it being a big deal that my Dad had spent that much on me. Actually it was in such good shape for one main reason, the kid was scared to ride it. He said he crashed once and that was it for him and he went back to his other bike.

So the entire rear end pivots. There are some videos on YouTube. Also here is an advertisement I found! You can see the rear end pivoting.

Haha, that looks so dangerous! I love it

Gave my truck a bath today. I’ll try to wax it before winter. It’s a 85 with a 350. We recently put in a new Weiand intake as well as a new distributor and Carb. She runs so much better and my MPG has increased!!

Recently Started a thread asking about utilizing a weight bearing post on a garage. I didn’t get a lot of feedback so I began brainstorming some ideas of my own. I recently bought some reclaimed 3/4 inch plywood for $10 a sheet and this is what I'm using. Here is the post in question. I'll never be able to remove this beam, so I'm planning on making the best of it and using it to my advantage.

attachment.php

I cut the plywood to the width of the boxed in air duct on the ceiling. It makes the area wider, but the post was already in the way to begin with. I have a block under the far front corner. I wanted it up off the ground.

attachment.php

I left the other side open and I have some plans for that. Hopefully I'll be able to get to them soon!!

Unruh: if you might have some long wood clamps you might nail in a couple 2x4's on that little wall and hang them from that. I'm going to hang mine on the backside of the door into the garage if I can get my bride's approval cause it does open into the main part of our living, dining rooms and kitchen.

looks like you found a few things. levels, crow bars and other longer items could work too if you don't have a lot of clamps. or maybe screw some storage bins onto it or make some shelving if you have room?

good luck

I did have time to do some painting and trim work today as well. You can see the marks from the previous barn it was in before.

Drives!! Great to hear from you. I was thinking of putting some french cleats on the wall and use it like that, but first I'm gonna try something else. I'd say what it is, but I may very well fail awesomely and have to scrap it. Wish me luck.

Good progress with garage and your truck. I'm getting some ideas for my own Garage project...

That may be the best compliment you can give on Garage Journal! Thank you!!

As for the truck. I was looking for a $4,000 truck and found this one on Craigslist for $6,500. I messaged him just to tell him that I thought it was a nice looking truck and I was a fan. He replied and we traded a couple of emails. About two weeks after the first email, my wife went into labor with our second child. His email happened to be pulled up and I emailed him "IT'S A BOY!!". He emailed me back later on and said "Great News! If you still have the $4,000 the truck is yours, Congratulations!"

I picked the truck up two days after bringing home our boy.

Got started on the wall. I built a fold down table. I'm thinking of putting on a grinder or maybe my spindle sander.

I had a lot of scraps left over from different projects and we started up the fire pit.

Started on the drawers. First one is a test fit. It went okay. The slides are some of the better slides from when I replaced the slides in my Toolbox.

attachment.php

Not sure if this is the way it will stay, but I'm pretty happy with the set up. I've been slowly buying C clamps and was kinda looking for a way to store them. This is what I came up with.

attachment.php

Here it is pushed in. It is a good fit and I'm looking for some good door handles now.

attachment.php

Spray paint can go in this drawer. They just fit two wide. As you can see behind the photo on the shelves, I may have to thin them out.

I just noticed your thread for the first time today & read it cover to cover. I love all the great projects, and fix-up's you've shown here! Your grease gun holder is an awesome idea, I'm stealing that one for sure! :D

Looking forward to your continued updates on your various projects.

Unruh: one idea I'm thinking of is to steal handles from an old toolbox if you have one or can pick one up cheap for those cool storage drawers you just built. are there more vinyl toolbox decals in smaller sizing to maybe make the front of the drawers look like one like you did on your little freezer?

great idea BTW!!!

Thanks! I’m glad it’s working out. I’m going to stop at Hobby Lobby in Tacoma Saturday and check out their handles, last time in there I saw a lot of different ones to pick from. Hopefully something catches my eye.

So I’ve been looking for a way to store extension cords other than the tried and true nail on the wall and let them hang method. I found plans for a cord caddie and went with that.

First I made six of these. The dowels are spacers and are cut at 1 1/2" for my shorter cords and at 2" for my longer cords.

attachment.php

Here is one put together.

attachment.php

The arms pivot in allowing for easy removal.

attachment.php

I'm going to make the caddie part this weekend hopefully!

All done with the grinder mounted.

attachment.php

That's slick I like it a lot.

I'd like to use the Crankshaft idea and put a twist on it literally. I want a grinder table that rotates in the corner that has different grit grinding wheels and wire brushes. Pull a pin and rotate the table so the correct grinder is facing the operator. I was thinking maybe a triangular shaped table with 3 grinders with 6 wheel options.

I’ve been thinking of that as well. I have three grinders with different brushes and buffing pads on them. Find a way to add a vise to it as well and you’d be able to retire from Garage Journal orders alone!

Retiring sounds nice. I won't put any buffing wheels near any metal working grinders.

Got the shelves done! I think they turned out really nice. Overall the dimensions are 48” wide X 12” high X 13” deep.

I put in the cords and they fit!! I also added some places for my belt sanders and some other slots for whatever.

I also was able to work on the new weight bearing small wall...?!?

I went to Hobby Lobby and found some wrench drawer pulls. They were on closeout for $2.99!

attachment.php

Here is the desk I found my laptop fit great on it!

attachment.php

Here it is with the drawers open. They slide great with those Snap-on slides. I took the slides apart and put some lube on them and they roll great!

Your small wall turned out looking pretty slick, I like it! :)

Thanks! The post was always a point of frustration with me and I’m really happy with the extra storage. It allowed me to clean off a different shelf and made me find a new way to store my extension cords which helped me clean off a different shelf.

Here is a different kind of project. I’m a teacher and each year I read Harry Potter out loud to the kids. They love it and for about two months we have a bunch of kids running around as wizards at recess. So this year I wanna read Harry Potter in December and for Christmas presents give the kids wands that I turned on the lathe. I have a couple good exotic wood stores close by that helped supply me with random 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 pieces. I have been turning them off and on and have a good set of wands.

attachment.php

I have been looking everywhere for boxes to put them in for the kids but I can't seem to find cost efficient ones. I decided to just make some easy boxes myself. I'll add some batting and maybe some cloth for a liner. They'll be perfect.

Unruh: your beam wall turned out great. WELL DONE!!

also my bride used to read me and my 3 youngest kids HARRY POTTER BOOKS on our shortish and long road trips. she really did have some good voices for the characters too.

kids being kids though i might take a few points off a few of those wands cause pretty sure some of your class might be poking these at each other. maybe not is always the hope, but just saying.

great box for the wands and how many kids in your class? what grade do you teach?

Thanks for the compliment! I’m really happy with the way it turned out and the extra storage is so nice.

I do some of the voices as well while reading, but I’m sure your wife does better. Either way the kids love it.

I teach at a private Montessori school and have 20 kids from K-4th grade in the classroom. One thing about being a male teacher is that I don’t get a lot of tool talk from co-workers...lol. That’s why Garage Journal is so nice for me.

Sir! You have some very good ideas! Shelves are just great!

Thanks! I think they turned out better than I was expecting. I’m really happy with them.

I was looking for a $4,000 truck and found this one on Craigslist for $6,500. I messaged him just to tell him that I thought it was a nice looking truck and I was a fan. I love cool stories about things like this that were ultimately meant to be. I also love everything about that truck, especially how the grille announces its presence with the perfect degree of authority.

You continue to impress me on multiple levels Unruh, with your choice of projects, the motivations for doing them, your creativity and work ethic, your seemingly boundless positive energy, not to mention the obvious dedication you have to your family and students.

This is the second time in the last month or so that I've read through this entire thread, and I wanted to let you know it has lifted my spirits on both occasions. Thank-you for that, as well as the inspirational project ideas.

Unruly: I don’t recall the truck story because it was worth remembering. Especially since your truck is in the ballpark of what I’d like to own. Any more pics of it??

Great idea on extension cord storage too!!

So I actually have a question about some paint...

Look under the tailgate.

See that strip of metal and all the surface rust on it? I know that I'll never be able to match the paint if I paint it so I was thinking of painting it a different color? What should I do?
