Christmas time! I am really bad about taking during pictures. Here is what I remembered to take. I wanted to make my wife a new jewelry box. I checked out a bunch of different ideas on YouTube and felt inadequate. Some of those are so amazing and so far out of my range . I found a pretty good plan on YouTube from The New Yankee Workshop and they had a link to the plans. Last time I worked from plans and it was nice, this time I had plans and a video and thought I could do it!

First I bought a bunch of walnut and milled it down to 1/2.

I got to use my new table saw and router lift. So happy with it. These grooves hold the shelves.

Here is my first mistake. I wanted the drawers to have splines on the corners. I went ahead and put in the top false drawer and forgot to add the splines

Tried to come up with some random patterns for compartments for the drawers and the top.

This is the top. I made my daughter come down and help me get an idea for layout.

Middle row and bottom row. They have a stained plywood bottom, I'm going to cover this with felt.

And after the felt is added.

So on the front I added some curly maple handles, and I did put splines in the base to try it in. That is why I wanted splines on the drawers and false drawer, but only we will know!

And my favorite part. The bottom is a hidden drawer! it actually opens ! I thought for sure it was going to bind and be awful, but it opened pretty smooth right away and even better once I added some wax.

Thank you all! I’m actually really excited to give it to her. I’m thinking of making some simpler ones for my daughters. One is almost 16 and she’d really love it, but my other is 2 and hers would need to have metal reinforced corners. Maybe it could work on my welding skills?

Thank you! I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t remember to add the splines to the drawers, but still I’m really happy with it.

I used General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Simi-Gloss wipe on poly. I did two coats on the inside, but 3 on the top and the rest of the outside.

I have an irritating tendency to over complicated things so its nice to see someone else's often simpler solution prior to me going down the rabbit hole

And yes, I'm with you on the nervous side! For me I generally have it down to 3 reasons:

1. They don't like it
2. They love it and expect other similar gifts from there out
3. Others see it, love it and now want me to make something for them!

I have been turning some Christmas ornaments. Woodcraft has their little kits for sale for $2.99 and I found some wood there. It is called Bethlehem Olive Wood. So they harvest the wood from the oldest olive trees in the city of Bethlehem taking unproductive parts from the trees allowing for new healthier growth.

This is the one my wife picked out.

Since I had the lathe going, I decided to turn another Harry Potter inspired wand. I found this cool snake skin leather at JoAnn’s and tried my hand at hand stitching.

Thanks! I’m really happy with the jewelry box. The table saw is amazing and the more I use it the happier I am with my purchase. Now, much to my wife’s dismay, I’m on to the next garage improvement. I really want a wood lathe that has variable speed and a bigger complicity for wooden bowls. Time to start another savings account!!

A local guy is selling his woodworking business. I have a lot of the tools that he was selling, maybe not the high quality, and I just don’t have the money he was asking. I did get some smalls that I had been wanting.

I got a great Lie-Nielsen No. 4 hand plane.

A Dovetail saw from Rob Cosman. The front teeth are finer toothed so that you can start the cut easier.

Some Incra stuff and some Veritas stuff.

I also got a wood burner that isn’t pictured and some turning tools too.

He has an amazing workbench that I’m really wanting, but he wants $2000 for it. I just can’t spend that right now.

I did make a Christmas gift for my sister. It’s a recipe box, it’s still drying. I made the top out of my scrap pile of KOA and used some epoxy to make a river lid. The sides are Poplar, because I had it available, and splines with the KOA.

Of coarse, my wife loves it and now wants me to make one for her...

I only did one. This is my first try and I didn’t want to waste a bunch of epoxy if I messed up somehow. Luckily it turned out good, I figured I had a 50/50 chance.... I learned a lot from this one and have a some great wood picked out for my next ones.

I also found a great place to get wood. There is a Millworks/cabinet place close to me. I stoped in and asked them what they do with their off cuts. The owner said they put them in a box and the guys take them home and burn them! I asked if he would sell them and we agreed on a price of $20 or a case of beer for a big plastic tote. He said just stop by every now and then and pick it up. The cut offs are cherry, maple, walnut, alder, hickory...etc and anywhere from 18 inches long to 6 inches long.

Ok, now you've done it. I will admit I don't typically like epoxy rivers. But somehow... I really like this one! What have you done to me!?

I think it's the wood choices, execution, the small scale, the clean more traditional details like the bevel and miter splines, and the asymmetrical "river" placement. Once again the Koa looks awesome and the grain around the "river" works perfectly. You obviously put a lot of thought into the whole piece and not just the epoxy part.

Not that I expected anything less from you but... another excellent project!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I have been busy in the garage since Christmas. My amazing wife bought me a new Laguna 1216 wood lathe and I started sharing my video’s on YouTube. So here is one of them I posted.

The lathe is a huge upgrade over my old Delta. It has 1 horsepower over the 1/3 hp I had before and it is super quiet. I’m really happy with it.

I will say that it is very relaxing turning on the lathe. Those tools you inherited are nicer than the the ones I use.

It’s funny because, my Mom is over 80 and I don’t think she understands that other people can’t see her comments.

The Michigan shirt...When I was in 2nd grade, So 38 years ago, my Dad bought me a Dallas Cowboys jacket and a Michigan hat. Ever since those have been my two teams. Last year was a very tough year...

Yeah he had a lot of Powermatic tools. 12 Jointer, Planer, Disc Sander, and their top of the line Wood Lathe. I was late to the party, but did see he sold his $7,000+ Wood Lathe for $2,000. UGH! He also had a Saw Stop Table Saw that was still available when I visited, but of course I had just bought mine. I think the next piece of machinery I may be in the market for is a drum sander. I’m gonna try to find one on Craigslist, hopefully something shows up.
