Just read through most of this thread. Love all your projects and they almost make me want to take up woodworking... almost

Well after checking out your thread, I think you are doing pretty good with all your projects! I could never do half the stuff you’re doing.

I made a spline jig for my table saw.

attachment.php

I also made a video and put in on YouTube. Making videos is much harder than I thought I would be. I was never good about taking pictures and documenting my builds on here.

I also made a couple other projects. I made a book shelf for the tree house. I love how the books stay up on their own! My oldest daughter wants to paint it so I just used pine and some cedar decking for the back that I had sitting around.

attachment.php

I also made a tree house that looks like our house. We have a big corner post on our fence and it looks great up there. A bird flew into the garage and tried to steal the motorcycle, but I have the key!

attachment.php

I also found this older picture of me by this giant tree! It was the World’s Largest Sitka Spruce. It blew down in 2007.

That bookshelf is legit. Definitely my next project for my daughter's secret hideout room. Any chance you have dimensions or a cut list or plans by chance to help me speed up the process? Completely understand if not, I guess the randomness could also lead to some additional charm as well!

Unfortunately I don’t. I kinda wish I would have written things down as I built it, but now I’ll have to work backwards from the original. My wife likes it so much, she wants me to build one for her sister’s birthday gift out of some nicer wood.

My boy wanted a Star Wars play set for some of his toys. The entire family got together and helped out on this one!! We also tried our hand at making a short Star Wars video at the end.

That tree looks like the one in my back yard

All the angles in that bookshelf are making my brain hurt. It looks great! And the design definitely looks like it belongs in a tree house.

Nice job on the Youtubes, it's fun to see your shop in video. The Star Wars scene cracked me up. Your kids are lucky to have such a creative and involved dad!

Lots of cool stuff going on at your place. Well done!!

It is a lot of fun. My son really likes to be in there with me.

Unruh,

I live pretty close to your area. Where was that big tree????

It was down my Seaside. My sister lives in Portland and we saw it while we were there.

So on a side note. I just had to do something outside in the dark and had my 5 year old son hold the flashlight for me. So awesome to be on the other side of that exchange!!

I thought I would try my luck at doing a segmented bowl. First I cut strips of Sepele, Walnut, Alder and White Oak. I also used some Maple for the bottom.

attachment.php

Then I used Rockler’s Perfect Miter Setup Blocks. I used the eight sided setup block to get the angle right.

I cut these into different lengths and had to start glueing up the octagons.

After they dried I glued the rings on top of each other.

First I started smoothing out the outside.

attachment.php

This is my first time doing the inside of something like this. It was kinda scary sticking the tool inside of the bowl. Also my tool rest really wasn’t long enough so my leverage was off a bit. After some scary bites, I kinda got the hang of it.

attachment.php

Here is how it turned out. I really like the color combo of these woods together. I also did the top layer with the same alternating pattern as the layers. Being my first successful bowl, my wife called dibbs right away.

Excellent work on that bowl! It's kind of nice to see how it's actually made. I bet you'll get the hang of working well with that lathe in no time ;)

i've still got the first (and only at this point) wood bowl I made in 8th grade woodshop class about 50+ years ago. it's not quite as PURDY as yours, but i still use it to throw my change and keys in.

great job and looking forward to seeing more of your cool projects!!!

I did a lot of research on segmented turning, my viewing time for the week went up a lot!

Those are great! My first was a failure so it was nice to have a success. Like I said, my wife is keeping the first one so this bowl is hers, hopefully she keeps it as long as you have!

I made a video of the bowl. I am still getting the hang of the video thing, but I find it helps me think things out a bit. I have to plan about things before hand and sometime I try to explain the why I did something. Hopefully it will make me better!

Great work Unruh! Love the bowl you made.

Tip for clamping the segment parts I learned from Frank Howart using large hose clamps. I guess rubber bands do just fine, but if you really want to squeeze them tight hose clamps could be great.

You have made great videos too:beer:

Another way to make your wood bowls as you probably know is to use blocks of wood or if you'd like multy layers and colors you can just glue up half inch or inch thick wood pieces and make them as big as your bowl say 4, 6, or 8... inches square. there is a lot more waste cause you'll need to cut more material out of the center, but you might be able to get the wood tighter without any tiny gaps.

I watched the video and looked pretty good to me and music was easy to listen to while watching you maneuver that cutter around.

I did notice a new bandaid so not sure how you hurt or cut yourself, but I hope it was something that will heal fast.

that intro with the 3 UNRULY KIDS and your 5 year old LOGAN saying he's not ruly is priceless.

keep up the good work!!

Lovely bowl you made.
I haven't turned any large wooden pieces since "manual training class" in public school about 1946-7. It was a sandwich tray about 18-24 inches in dia.
Tricky as hell anddangerous, but it came out well.

I thought you did a good job on your video. I subscribed soon after you started.[emoji106]

Thanks for the information on Frank Howart! I watched his Bamboo Death Star and now wanna try one. I’ll try out those clamps soon, the reason I haven’t been too worried about that part is that part is end grain glueing and the real strength comes from the glueing of the layers themselves. But I plan on trying the hose clamps soon.

Thanks! I think I’ll do a video on one of the Nimbus 2000’s soon. I bet your daughter would get a kick out of seeing how I make them.

I agree that it is dangerous, sticking that tool inside that spinning bowl is intense the first time!!

I bet she would and her hubby would too since he's on base out of the country where Covid has them almost quarantined.

as far as cutting inside the bowl I bet with your cut corners that cutter was bouncing around pretty good. As I recall (now this is 50 years ago) having solid wood (glued up pieces in my case making that bowl) I don't recall it being scary a bit or the blade bouncing around much and I wasn't all that strong at 14 when I weighed about 100 pounds.

try a block of wood or a chunk of a tree for fun and make a little bowl (you can maybe trim off the corners first on a bandsaw) and see if you like cutting into solid wood instead of hitting all the little corners and having your blade bounce hard.

good luck and we have ours about 6 feet from my laptop now leaning up against our fireplace we rarely if ever make a fire in.

cheers!!

I have a couple burls and some other wood that I wanna turn as well. My sister watched my last video and asked for a bowl for herself, so I have another segmented bowl on my list too!

I'm glad that the brooms and wands were a hit. I am trying my hand at a Firebolt broom now. It is a lot more complicated than the Nimbus 2000!

Here is a fun project I did. My daughter wanted a bed for her babies. So I dug back into my pile of KOA scraps. They say the best wood to use for a project is free wood! I'm going to be really sad when it is all gone, but on to the bed! I tried to make it look like a floating bed.

Here is the bottom.

Here is the top and you can see the headboard and how it looks to be floating.

The Grandma's wanted to help so they did some sewing for me. They made a mattress, fitted sheet, top sheet, pillow and even a quilt for the top!

attachment.php

I tried my hand at a forced perspective picture. It didn't turn out good on my phone, but my wife got some good ones on her camera. It looks like the bed is full size. We even took a video of my daughter standing in the back and then running up to the bed, it turned out really good.

well i guess you'll have to make another bigger bed for your daughter's dolls won't you?

that looks like a great project and nice to see not only you making things for you little girl, but grandmas joining in made it even better.

I can't wait to see the FIREBALL!!

FYI my bride has some virtual Harry Potter thing for work and since everyone is online seeing each other she'll have our Nimbus 2000 next to her which should get a few good comments especially as she waves her wand at her co workers while flying virtually thru HP land in London.

take care and keep up the good work!!

Nice bed project! It's these little things they will remember when old, "my dad used to make awesome things out of wood himself!"

Right! Hopefully it won’t get broken and last for awhile (I have a pretty rambunctious 5 year old boy that has a habit of breaking stuff).

I finished the Firebolt. I did some stuff I hadn’t done before. I did some Shou Sugi Ban, using fire to do a finish, on this one. A lot of hand held router work. I hadn’t used Mahogany too much before, but really like how it sands and finishes.
