Great work Unruh! Love the bowl you made.

Tip for clamping the segment parts I learned from Frank Howart using large hose clamps. I guess rubber bands do just fine, but if you really want to squeeze them tight hose clamps could be great.

You have made great videos too:beer:

Working on a new wooden bowl and took your advice. These hose clamps worked much better!!

My oldest daughter asked for a longboard and I thought that would be a neat video to try to do. I went to my local mill works store, in the back they have some cut offs of different kinds of wood. The guys there like to trade for beer, so I grabbed a case of beer and traded for some nice walnut and maple (I got some Alder, Oak, and Mahogany but didn’t use it on this project).

I cut the walnut and maple into strips and cut them to size.

attachment.php

I glued them up like a long cutting board.

attachment.php

Then I ran it through the planer to get them flat.

My daughter wanted a shark on the bottom of her board. I found an image on google and I ran it through my Carvewright CNC machine.

attachment.php

I found a template for a longboard an cut it out. I centered it and marked the border. I have an order in for a template so I can just use a flush trim router bit on the next one, but for my first try I thought this would work.

attachment.php

Then I cut close to the line on the bandsaw.

Over to the sander to sand to the line. Bret had said that this was a nice sander and I agree. It really has gotten a lot of use and is great.

attachment.php

We looked at the epoxy I had available, but she just wanted black.

attachment.php

When I add the epoxy, I try to keep it just under the lip. Then when I sand it doesn’t actually scratch the epoxy.

I took it to the router and used a 1/2 roundover on the bottom and a 1/4 inch roundover on the top.

attachment.php

I sanded it up to 220 and then sprayed it with water to lift the grain. Once it dried, I sanded it again with 220.

attachment.php

I then put on four coats of this Clear Wood Finish from Deft. I really like this finish. you don’t need to sand between coats. After the fourth coat, I just ran some paper from a brown paper bag over it. It turned out great!

I’ve been missing your updates somehow. That longboard is so cool, I’ll bet your daughter loves it. Nice job.

I ordered some hardware, wheels and trucks for the board from Amazon. I knew nothing about this stuff, but the local skate shop was really helpful.

The skate shop guy put the grip tape on the top for me.

your skills with woodworking and creative juices are really ramping up. WELL DONE!!

I like the fireball and the skateboard and i'm sure your kids do too.

how do you like using EPOXY? and does your little propane flame knock out most of the bubbles?

That is so cool!! I went to school in CA and used to longboard EVERYWHERE. Still have a Sector 9 but it hasn't been used in quite some time.

I'll just leave this here if your daughter wants some inspiration (or anybody wants a short break from their day):

Also, when did you get a CNC haha?

Super work Unruh I am jealous!

The Epoxy is nice. I got some MAS table top epoxy for my birthday a couple of years ago and some soap dye of all things. The soap dye is nice, but all kinda soft colors. I have bought a few different more bold colors from the local Rockler. I only had an issue once with it. A small part some letterings I did didn’t cure right and was still soft a few days later. Since then I just really try to mix a longer and haven’t had any issues. The flame is super cool. Bubbles will form all along the top and just quickly going over it with the flame and they pop and leave it smooth.

Super work Unruh I am jealous!

My sister has asked me to make a longboard for her son for his birthday. He actually rides and Sector 9 gear is what we have decided on. The local shop guy ordered the gear last week. He also liked my board and asked if I would be willing build some and sell them in his shop. Super cool!

I watched that video and was amazed. I see the allure of what they do, but my knees wouldn’t ever allow me to bend that way!

The CNC is the Carvewright system that I had found on Marketplace. I got really lucky that the previous owner really knew his stuff. He had everything lubed and set when I got it. I hear a lot of horror stories about the machine, but so far I have had just minor things happen. The problem is that it has shown me a taste of some of the things you can do with them!

Nick you need to try that Deft finish on a small project and let me know what you think!

make sure your little girl gears up before longboarding down hills cause one little pebble/rock/crack can throw a person that is just learning.

that said you made her a great board and happy to hear you might have created another business to help you pay for your shop tools and time.

have a great day!!

TRU DAT... I just remember when I was a kid & skateboarded... I was a eagle eye as I rode looking for ANY rock/pebbles because from experience I knew that if I hit one I was going to go flying about 20ft foward :shocking: while my board went speeding the opposite direction until I ran & caught it from continuing :willy_nil... LOL!!

supposedly the "new" boards have magic wheels on them that help to keep those instances from happening :3gears:.. atleast that is what I seem to see from the neighborhood kids that ride around... they are not like me when that age...:pimpflash

Hadn't heard of it, I'll have to check it out. Maybe I just need to cave and get a spray setup, but I do like the clear poly for light wood projects like birch and maple, which I gravitate towards. Super happy with General Finishes water-based poly, but brush strokes and drips are the trickiest part, even with a foam brush. The "wipe-on" minwax waterbased stuff I used on the built-ins sorta worked, but dried so dang fast, again it was difficult to spread without stroke marks. Sticky, too, not as fool proof as their solvent wipe on. All this to say, I am still looking for a water-based poly that is easy to apply. Maybe I should try a foam roller, too. Anyways, thanks for the suggestion.

After you put your poly on try hitting it with a heat gun. I find that it will lay the brush strokes down and it will pop any bubbles. Sorry to just jump in, Jim

Working on a new wooden bowl and took your advice. These hose clamps worked much better!!

Hey great! I've been watching Frank using those hose clamps and thought it's a nice trick. I've learn a lot of tricks from Frank's videos:thumbup:

Amazing work on the longboard:bowdown: It came out super nice.

I've tried my kids skateboards few times and have learned one cool trick, "how to peel your knees":bounce:

Great stuff Unruh! I have to catch up your new videos:thumbup:

So my son wanted a “Pick-up just like Daddy’s”. I made his a bit better. I added dual exhaust. Straight pipes going all the way back!

attachment.php

I found some paint that matches good and got the wheels to look pretty close to mine.

attachment.php

I put in a Alpine tape player and got some great tapes for him. Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Poison, Guns-n-Roses, George Straight, Garth Brooks and looks like a mixed tape from my high school girlfriend...

attachment.php

Here is the kicker. I found a guy that 3D printed a LS motor for me. So instead of a 350 his has a LS swap.

attachment.php

Here is mine for comparison.

I can see that you and Bret will get along famously :) Awesome work on the long board. I made one for dry land windsurfing (we use to slalom race on pavement), which is a bit scary due to the speeds one gets...and takes a pretty big long board for stability. I ended up laminating a few plies of carbon fibre cloth in between the wood (using West System epoxy) which is a sneaky way to play with flex, while taking up strength a bit using sandwich construction. Just a tip in case you need to adjust :) That board still hangs in my shed.

Your board is much prettier than mine!

Thanks Bret! I’ve seen some of your creations and sure appreciate your feedback.

I am a bit worried about that, my daughter is pretty little and let’s be honest...that longboard will get about as much use as (insert something witty here Unruh), so I’m not too worried about it. However; I have had a couple people reach out and ask me about making them one.

Nice job on the truck. Logan is a luckey kid

Thanks Jim. I already had to put new rear tires on it :3gears:. The boy has a lead foot and the combo of being light and that LS motor is too much for him!

I finally had some time to check out most of your thread, I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner! I love the look of your shop. You're skills and creativity are certainly something to be proud off. You sure do like to keep busy! Saw a few ideas I will surely be borrowing. The holder you made for your grease gun will certainly be one of them. Mine lives in a 5 gallon bucket, and is disgusting haha.

That table saw/router combo is also a beauty. Super jealous of that piece.

So I got this set for Christmas. It is from Taylor Tools. It comes with everything you need to make a marking gauge.

https://taytools.com/products/marki...tters-2-brass-inserts-and-knurled-thumb-screw

It also comes with directions and different templates to use.

attachment.php

I got this cool chunk of wood from a local woodworker. He said he thought it was Ebony, but after I cut into it I think it is Padauk with a bit of sap wood on it.

attachment.php

So I cut out the template that I selected and glued it onto my piece of wood. Then I drilled a hole with the bit that came with the set.

So I took it over to my scroll saw and cut along close to the lines. When I sanded, it really had a lot of orange sawdust so that makes me think it was for sure Padauk.

attachment.php

Here I am putting the threaded brass insert in. The kit comes with two and it says “an extra to provide practice”. Mine luckily when in straight.

attachment.php

Then it was off to finish. I used my new favorite finish the Deft Semi-Gloss Wood Finish. I put on four coats and then rubbed it with some brown paper bag.

attachment.php

Here is the end result. I think that it will darken more with time, but I really like the wood. It was a fun project and goes great with the one I got from Bret!

So the NFL Draft is tonight and I’m having some guys over to watch (social distancing of course) and I’m making my Bacon Explosion. I’m not sure if you all have heard about this before or not, but I thought I would share.

So first I got some Bacon and some Sausage from Costco. You have to weave the bacon. I think mine ended up being 7X7.

attachment.php

So hear is the weave. I was careful to make sure it was pretty tight. I made a few mistakes before.

attachment.php

Once the weave is done. I went ahead and put on some pork rub.

Layer of sausage goes on top of the bacon. I have this about 1/4 inch thick.

At this point you can add green peppers, cheese...etc. I had cooked up some more bacon and crumbled it on top. I also added more rub and some BBQ sauce.

Now you roll it up. I had my wife help me with this. She was not amused! I added some toothpicks to keep it together.

I put it on the smoker. I started early in the morning at 150 degrees so I got a lot of smoke in it.

you might want to rent DRAFT DAY with Kevin Costner as a warm up for your dinner and the actual DRAFT?

that said who are you hoping the Seahawks draft or are they even your favorite team?

i'm not sure I saw (or maybe I missed it somehow) your finished skateboard (longboard) and your FIREBALL Quidiche Broom?

keep up the great work and that truck for Logan is amazing!!

I’m actually a Cowboys fan. I grew up in Montana and in second grade my dad bought me a Cowboys jacket and a Michigan hat. I’ve been a fan of both ever since. However, I think the Seahawks need to draft a O-lineman. Teven Jenkins would be a great pick if he available.

It's a blessing and a curse. Sometimes I wish I wasn't like this, it can be exhausting haha.

Lol. The older I get the more I’ve been worried about the small things. Maybe it just keeps getting more important the older you get?

So after 4 hrs at 150 and then 1 hour at 300 to get the interior temp up to 145-150. I added BBQ sauce before I turned up the heat.

We need photos of the finished bacon project! Looks great!

I then cut it into about 3/4 inch slices. Some of the guys put their slices into buns and ate them as a Bacon Explosion burger and others just ate them plain. I had planned on taking a picture of it sliced up, but everyone was waiting on them. After I sliced it, I went to the sink to wash my hands and go grab my phone and when I returned only two pieces remained. Everyone loved it! :rocker:
