I'm looking for a good quality long hex socket set. I can't justify Snap-on for something that I would use very infrequently, so I was wondering what brand you guys recommend.

I'd like to stay away from the type of sockets that have the hex bit held in the socket with a small set screw. I have a short MATCO set with that system and it's a PITA. The bits keep falling out under heavy torque situations.

If you run across any let me know.
I'm of the opinion a secent allen wrench hasn't been made in 20 years.

As far as the falling out socket system, just glue the damn thing together with a dab of JB Weld. If you need toremove it, heat the socket up till the JB burns and disassemble. It beats hell out of crawling around on the deck looking for the wrench.

I think Craftsman ones don't have the set screw but I could be wrong. I am wanting to buy the snap on's because I think with allen sockets and torx sockets they are the only brand to go with.

I'm ordering the JB Weld right now -- thanks Franz

Craftsmans are the "Press Fit" with-out the set screw or "roll pin" The smaller allens will twist if you aren't careful - I twisted one pretty easily, still haven't taken it back yet though.

if the craftsman are from danaher they will be like the matco's i have, the bits WILL fall out. if fighting the bits faling out is a problem pony up and get the snap ons..........
i have sk and matco in long bits and they both fall out, it's a pita but they work ok. i have had shorts in several brands with circlip and set screws. i usally tack welded the bits in then when the broke replaced them with snap on's. they are all snap on now! fro my experience i'd buy the snap ons the first time.....it's cheaper than buying them twice.

I use my Craftsman bits more than I use my sockets, I think. Anyway, the Craftsman ones I have are pressed in (maybe 4 years old or so)
