Long narrow garages

All I have at home is a 29' x 14' attached garage with a finished ceiling. that works out to 406 sq feet, about the same as a 20' x 20' at 400 sq feet.

I rent a big barn, but that a couple miles away, but someday, that barn will not be available any longer. All my tools will have to come back, along with the '46 Ford, numerous engines, rear ends, wheels, tires and extra parts.

Anybody got some really good ways of making a different shape garage work?

Ooof... I was just about to comment that 14' at least gave you enough room on the sides to get around things...

Back when I was a kid there was a gentleman near my grandfather that had a shop with dimensions similar to yours - possibly longer if anything. He used it for woodworking, though. That worked for him because he had it set up with the raw wood coming in the one end for storage and then progressing down through the various machines in order - starting with jointers and planers to saws, lathes, and such, and finally to sanding and then finishing - with the finished product coming out the other end.

The problem here is that you really don't have the length to even have two "stations" where you could pull a vehicle up to the "head" of the garage and have certain equipment and then pull it back to the entrance where other equipment is located. So you end up sort of like your picture shows...

I don't know what all you have behind the cameraperson in that photo, but I'd try to move the storage to the head of the garage to clear more room around the sides to actually work on things. Right now it looks like you really don't even have a travel path from where the cameraperson is standing to the back of the garage without climbing over things. Perhaps a shed to move the bicycles out of there?

like i was told in a thread i started about organizing my small piece of paradise, utilize the back wall for lots of vertical storage. lots of cabinets
