Long pattern double box end

Well as I not so gracefully age, I am turning into a true "tool polisher", buying tools just "because". Several years ago I bought a second set of Craftsman SAE combination wrenches with 6 point box end. I can't say that the 6 point box end has really "saved my bacon" but I like the idea of having 2 of the same size wrench.

Now I find myself "lusting" for some long pattern, double box end metric wrenches. I am NOT going to spend a ton of money on them, which leaves me with a choice of Craftsman or HF. HF has no long pattern wrenches. Craftsman does have long pattern DBE, even in full polish (ooohhh, ahhhh ) but only 12 point. This will be a small set (8mm-16mm).

Should I just go with the 12 point ?

(Segue - I committed to 6 point sockets over 40 years ago. Best decision I ever made !)

I bought these stahlwille on Amazon.de..........with the exchange rate and shipping it worked out to $109 usd.......seemed like a good deal.

My favorite double box wrenches are the Snap-on XBM series. They are thicker and more meaty than their combo wrenches. I buy them one at a time so I don't get sticker shock. The 8mm x 10mm is only $36.50.

About 4 or 5 years ago when you could still order Craftsman tools from the sears website and possibly receive USA produced tools, I ordered two sets of long double box end 12 point wrenches. (One SAE set, one metric) Both sets arrived and luckily enough, I received all USA made wrenches. If we could go back in time I would tell you to do the same thing, unfortunately we cant. Today, I wouldn't give Sears 2 cents for their Chinese ****. Your mileage may vary.

I like the set by Beta, it was only around £120 And goes up to around 24mm.

Do you have a lift to work with? If not you'll struggle to use these most of the time as there just too long.

The extra long zero offset type are real handy when you want reach or extra torque.

Tekton has a larger set up to 32mm if needed.

I have the Tekton 45 degree set and a Gearwrench 0 degree with ratcheting on one end and plain ring in on the other. The extra length is awesome and breaking the fasterner loose with the non ratcheting end then switching to rapidly spin it off is very nice. The 8-19mm set is not much more than the non ratcheting sets with different sizes on each end. If you are only going to get one set I would recommend them.

I would go 12 point and pretty decent quality so fit is good.
trouble with 6 point is you have trouble getting it on fitting in limited space scenario making you beautiful long wrench not usable and you back on the standard lengths.

Are you after the flat aviation style extra long wrenches or offset double box end long wrenches ?

toptul long pattern combinations worth having and if or garage member still got them in his clearance stock the absolute bargain for precise fit quality .

I wish someone would make a long pattern double box wrench; one side 6 point, and the other side a locking flex head w/ reversible ratchet. Is that so much to ask for?!

YES

I've been asking for a standard length version with a fixed zero offset boxed end on one side and a flex head ratcheting boxed end on the other side.

There are plenty of long and extra long versions to choose from but, none in standard length.

I purchased GearWrench set #85988 XL Wrenches about a year ago after comparing all the options. These have saved me from a few headaches and have also just been nice to use. They’re great for brakes and I’ve also found the useful for belt some tensioners. Sizes go from 8mm - 19mm without skipping a size like some sets do. Definitely recommend them.

I bought an inexpensive thin 12 point at an autoparts store to remove a hard to get to bolt. Not only did it start to round the bolt, but the points on the wrench actually started to flatten. I bought the Cornwells and they are great, thin enough to get into tight places and fit well so will break free 30+ year old bolts. Kind of expensive, but 2 of 3 kids are adults so I figure time to get myself some nicer things. I got a good deal on Ebay the same month they were in the flyer. I asked to have a dealer contact me on the Cornwell website, but never got a response.

from my 30yrs of wrenching you can't get that good wrenches cheap as even if look great the broach design and tolerance or hardness let you down in real moment of need.
That point is amplified here as you want long pattern and they going get used at pretty high torque on some tight and crusty fixings.
You going find 12 point more usable as 6 point a complete **** to use in tight to swing arc spaces.
I got both and quality 12points get used 90% of time .
Avoid cheap wrenches and when going mod range be very choosy to get best product for you budget .

Long story I got A bunch of tools Donated to me some years ago doing some work for a charity. They gave me boxes of hand tools they got donated it included a good amount of Snap-On stuff including flat 12 point Standard Snap-on ones I used on Class 8 trucks of course they are nice and I have used them with a impact on the other side with no issue. I need some Metric I am interested in a review of what you get. I no longer wrench every day so I don't want to spend a ton of cash.

Mac skips the 21 for some reason but sells a 22/24

I got and can recommend the mac 6pc set which 8 to19mm no skips .

I bought the KTC ones before I got the Gearwrench ones. I am not sure if they are as good as the Genius set but they had fewer skipped sizes and no duplicates.

The KTC and Genius set skips 11mm and 13mm, which is used quiet often on my Porsche and other VAG vehicles.
