Long pattern wrench questions

Most of what I currently have/use are Craftsman raised panel combo wrenches. With some of the work I do with my Dad on old jeeps there are times when longer combination wrenches would be handy.

I am leaning towards 6 point but it appears options are limited for those versus 12 point. What are some options available on the market and possibly kit numbers as well? I would prefer US Made but probably won't be able to pay truck brand prices.

Thanks in advance!

Get the 12 point. Easier to get on a fastener in tight spots. An area where long patter shines. I would look into gearwrench. A 24 piece set of sae and metric will be about $150 give or take. Sorry no part number. Easy enough to Google though. Or go for their gear box. One side ratchets one side fixed for breaking loose fasteners. But no offset. Hell get both! Easily under $400, but I understand that's a lot at one time. Id go gear box first. Jmo

once you get above the really teeny sizes I don't think there is a real penalty to 12 point unless you're dealing with really rusty BS in which case I'm probably using impact sockets on a breaker bar. I've used Snap-On extra long box wrenches on lots of stuff and don't think that I've had one slip. That may be my next tool purchase, for my most recent purchase I bought stubbies mostly because nobody at my friend's shop has any while I can borrow the long boxes if I need them.

Double box wrenches are a little longer than long pattern but you loose the open end.

I don't see that as a penalty either; I'd be hesitant to use the open end on a longer than standard pattern wrench. Double box is the way to go for long wrenches as then you'll have half as many and therefore take up half as much toolbox real estate.

These are really nice escpially for the price: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Napa-7PC-Fu...91500981?pt=US_Hand_Tools&hash=item5aeb1b71b5 The napas are taiwan. I added a gearwrench long pattern 16mm and a proto double box 17x19,proto 22x24 and a craftsman 21x23mm,24mmx26mm double box. These are my long wrenches. Plus in standard for long wrenches a proto 1/2 x 9/16. Don't have much in long sae. Also have a 13x15 craftsman and 12x14 craftsman in car bag.

Oh ya, for what its worth, snap on standard length is as long as some other manufacturers long pattern. Ie their long pattern are the equivalent of xxl.

I, too, have found 12-pt wrenches easier to use in tighter spots. Sometimes, if movement is limited, I cannot get a 6-pt on the nut or bolt.

Get both 6 and 12 point, eventually. Relative had to replace power steering pump, I think it was, on his Ford diesel F250. 10 mm 12 point slipped off. I happened to have a 10 mm long pattern 6 point which I loaned him. It did the job.

Go with 12pt, 6pt can become a liability in tight(er) spaces with the longer wrenches. While you may have plenty of room to "roll" a standard length 6pt wrenches, you'll find that the longer ones run out of space pretty quick under a vehicle or even in the confines of an engine bay.

As far as buying USA only, be prepared to pay the price. I ended up going with an XL set made by Gearwrench, which has a box end and ratcheting end. They're not exactly cheap, but well worth the $140 it cost for an 8-19mm set. I also have the Genius and Toptul double box 0* offset XL wrenches, and they're pretty good for the money. Only complaint I have about the Toptul, it doesn't come with a 13x15mm wrench.

I went with double box ends instead of combos for my long pattern wrenches. When I'm reaching for a long pattern wrench, I prefer to use the box end anyway.

Matco makes box renches with one side ratcheting and one side fixed that are long. So does armstrong i think armstrong used to make matcos. I have a set and love them use the fixed side on stubborn bolts tham switch to the ratcheting end
