First time poster here. I have been reading and watching many threads over the last year,

I am looking for a Long pattern wrench set in SAE and Metric.

Right now I have my eye set on Gearwrench # 81916 SP (37pc) on eBay for $145

Sizes includes sizes 6-24, 27, 30 and 32 mm and sizes 5/16-1-1/8 and 1-1/4"

Another set is a GearWrench # 81919 44 pc for $194 on eBay. This set has every size. The other set skips sizes. This set has no wrench roll, but the other set does.

Any other brand out there I should look at? Right now I have craftsman USA and Snap On 1/4-7/8" and 9 -19 mm wrenches.

Not looking for snap on $$$ for this next set.

How are the wrights? People seem to love them on here. Do they make a long set or are they the same size vs my snap on set?

thank you

I use the gear wench long metric professionally. No problems except the 13 and 15 are getting a little loose after 3 years of everyday use.

I like tools with the easy warranty without hassles, when my Wright tools fail (not often) I must drop them off to a large tool business that sells wright and then I wait and that might be some time; so if you need them asap you are out of luck. (mind you wright are made in my home state).

Not sure about Gearwrench some people tell me you can take them back to sears or any of the other places that sell them for an exchange; if that is the case are you guys having any luck getting replacements?

Same thing with my proto tools I must hunt down a place that sells them and wait sometimes for a replacement.

Williams makes a nice set of wrenches but again with them I must mail them into Williams and wait for a replacement in the mail.

I say if you can walk in and walk out the same day for the Gearwrench replacement then go for it.

The biggest complaint I seem to hear on the Wrights is lack of a long pattern wrench. Even Snap On's standard length wrench is longer than Wright's combos.

It is a rare day I use my long patterns. If I need leverage, 9 times out of 10 my Hi-Performance wrenches do the job better.

However, if I was going to put money into a specific part of my wrench sets, it'd be my longer ones. Longer=more leverage=more likely to break. More likely to break=More likely for me to get hurt. I skimped on my shorties (HF), and splurged on my LP's (Snap-on), and Hi-Per's (Cornwell).

I am not worried about warranty.

Been a long time since I broke something. If I do then I can wait, I don't make a living with these tools.

I own the GearWrench 81919 set and have absolutely no complaints with them. Having said that I did just order the Wright 758 set to "upgrade" the metric portion of the set. Time will tell if I miss the length of the GearWrench set.

Snap On's standard wrenches are as long or longer than most long pattern wrenches, if you can find some used at a reasonable price; that is the way to go. I have a set of SK long pattern wrenches and I love them, they're my go-to wrenches. But they are about the same length as the standard Snap On's.

I think if I were buying new today, I would probably by Williams Super Combo wrenches.

Check out GJ member dschmidt, he sells Toptul. He has a long set which if I remember correctly was in the $75 range. I like my Toptul tools I have and pretty sure most who have bought them would tell you the same. Warranty? That is another story, I haven't had to warranty anything but probably would not be easy.

I went through a lot of wrenches before I settled. I'd rank the extra long ones

Matco Opti-Torque Pro
Snap-On FD+
Snap-On (standard)
Gearwrench

Cornwell are nice but didn't impress me. Great chrome, pretty looking, nice forging. On the down side the open ends are nothing special and they only stamp sizes on one side of the beam.

MACs are also nice save for the fact that the open ends are extremely fat and their open end modifications are useless.

Toptul makes the longest combo wrench in existence and they're cheap but again, standard open ends. The Gearwrench long patterns are a bit shorter than the truck brands long patterns. I rank FD+ and the Matco Opti-Torque Pro highest primarily because the open ends are fantastic. Second to that you're after leverage. The Gearwrench have modified open ends as well that are nearly identical to the Matcos but lose a few points due to being a inch or two shorter across the sizes.

Has the GW Set #81919 for sale for $189.99 with no tax and free shipping...

That is the lowest price I could find...

I bought one of the last "Forged in the U.S.A." Craftsman 43 piece raised panel wrench sets about two years ago...They're going to be replaced, by GW#81919, this Christmas---if I'm a good boy until then...

Is it possible if someone can tell me if the matco smclm102t "long" wrenches are longer then the snap on oexm set? I ask because some are saying snap one wrenches are longer vs the competitor.

Snap-On standard are the same as what other truck brands call long and what other brands, like SK and Craftsman, call Long pattern. Snap-On long wrenches are the same as what others call extra long.
