who makes the longest and best bang for your buck long pattern combination or double box end wrenches? I've got quite a bit of snap-on, mac, and matco in my box now but I'd like to stay away from them for this since these wrenches will only see occasional use.

I've gotten into a couple spots recently where I really wish I had some extra length when all you can get on a fastener is a box end. I've got a metric set of the craftsman professional long pattern combination wrenches, but I'd really like something that has some more length to them if possible. My grandpa used to have a set of barcalo double box wrenches that were great for something like this except they were offset.

Perhaps you want the really long style like zero offset high performance wrenches. Snap-on makes them also GearWrench, Matco, EZ-Red etc. They can be had with or without ratchet ends and are perfect for things like timing belts on FWD cars.

V8 makes some "super-long pattern" double box wrenches...they don't seem to be mentioned much on here, but might be worth a shot. Seven-piece SAE part number is 8007, nine-piece metric is 8509, looks like ~$60 per set.

Thats a good idea. I was wanting some long pattern wrenches but really don't need another set of combination wrenches. Finding a set of double box end long pattern wrenches would fill that need.

I have the v8 set, they are just ok....They don't come even close to the snap on zero offset. I'd be more tempted to buy the one or two snapon sizes i really needed even though i'm not a huge snap on fanboy

Gearwrench XL 12 pc metric double box ratcheting wrench set 8mm- 19mm is the best band for the buck at around $150.

I use them professionally and they can stand the abuse.

Get them, you won't be sorry:thumbup:

i've got - and love - the gearwrench XL double boxes as well. the genius are about an inch longer on average, but of course, they don't ratchet.

How long are the Cman double box end wrenches? This seems like a lot of wrenches for the price.

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-12-pc-box-end-wrench-set-inch/p-00902945000P

They are just a smidge longer depending upon size than the gearwrench and s&k long pattern wrench sets that I have.

What I mean by a smide is the 3/4 crafty double box is longer than the s&k and gearwrench long pattern. However the other side of the 3'4 crafty is 7/8 which is real close to the long pattern

get the GW set of zero degree ratcheting box / box. Very nice product. My ratcheting versions have completely negated any reason for having the zero degree non-ratcheting.

For extra-long combination wrenches that are comfortable to hold in your hand, look no further than Cornwell; but they're not cheap.

snapped a quick pic to give you an idea on length. Drew in some lines for a couple other options i either didnt have with me or dont own. Black line = aprox length of a 15mm GW Gearbox wrench. Red line = aprox length of a 15mm extra long combo.

They are a good value, the us made one are a bit nicer. I have them, they are the sames as the Armstrong ones at 1/2 the price, 13 piece metric for 90 dollars vs 11 for 230 dollars.

The Chinese made ones are pretty good as well. Just not as hard and the fit is a little less. But still a good value.

Cman Pro
Matco Pro-Swing
Matco Extra Long Flex
Matco Extra Long Double Flex

Skin,

Are the Matco Extra Long Flex wrenches U.S. manufacture? Looks like a very useful design.

I am also browsing for a long pattern combo wrench set. Here are some length comparisons of 19mm combination wrenches I made. Don't know any of the zero degree or the GW lengths but will update my post as I find them.

S.O. OEXM19B "Short" 177 mm long
Craftsman Raised Panel 241 mm long
Craftsman Professional 275 mm long
GearWrench 81676 "Long" 279 mm long
S.O. OEXM190B "Stan" 279 mm long
S.O. OEXLM19B "Long" 330 mm long
Armstrong 52-419 "XL" 333.5 mm long
Toptul AAEL1919 "XL" 347 mm long

IMHO the Armstrong Long Combination set appears to be the best bang for the buck if you are looking for a Made in USA product. The set is ~30% the cost of the S.O. set.

No, nobody in the US makes anything like that. They're manufactured by Kabo in Taiwan exclusively for Matco. They're silly expensive but a great wrench. The set goes from 8-19

Thanks, I thought that might be the case given the ratcheting end. Still, looks like a great wrench.
