Looking for a set of long reach diagonal cutters that won't break the bank but aren't junk either. My box is filled with Klien, usa craftsman, channellock and a few assortments of Japanese brand pliers. I recently ran into a job were I needed extra reach to cut away some wires so I figure I need to add to my collection. I havent found anything on par with my quality level. All I've found is harbor freight Pittsburg **** (not even doyle or the other newer brand) or ebay trash like neiko. Tekton has a pair for 30 bucks, but for that price I'd expect them to not be made in china and not the same tool I can get at harbor freight for 7 bucks minus a coupon. Everything I've seen looks horrible. Any ideas?

Snap On 312CF. I've had mine for decades now and never had any issues with them.

Knipex 10” are my favorite. I must have like 3 pairs, my orginals are almost 10 years old and still incredibly sharp.

These. Pretty much the gold standard. I used to have the snap on set. The cutting end broke in half. I don't remember what I was cutting but it wasn't anything they were not supposed to be cutting. I returned them to my snap on guy and exchanged them for the knipex. They are superior and less money . Snap on guy even said he sells far more Knipex pliers off the truck than snap on. Just my own experience.

I have the Knipex above and they are great but not sure if that's what you're looking for

I don't have them but Pro America(Everything I have from them is great) offers a pair of 11" Model 5043

The Tekton model is not $30 bucks.

As I recall, when I checked the prices online, Walmart was selling this model about two weeks ago for $16 and change.

The pair in the photo cost $12.07 incl. tax and shipping on Ebay as they were being sold as "factory seconds" (although I cannot see anything wrong with them.)
They appear to be fairly decent quality, which actually surprised me because ordinarily I avoid anything "made in China" like the plague.

You might also consider the Proamerica model, which is a US-made unit. The best price you will find on them is on Ebay from Bowers Tool out of Dallas (usually two day shipping to me.)

Knipex. I don't have the long reach ones but I have normal dikes, and other pliers made by knipex and they have all been great.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I think I'm going to order the William's. 28 bucks on tools delivered and it gives me an excuse to grab a few more things.

I have the 10" Knipex. I don't really like them, but then I don't use them every day like I use my 8" Kleins. The Knipex do come in handy once in awhile though. I have also seen long (10"?) Klein dykes at the supply house. I didn't even pick them up because they have the "Journeyman" grips and I really don't like those.

My daily drivers are the 10” Knipex. I have cut 1/4” steel bar with them, which is heavy abuse and they never complain. No damage to the cutting edges or joint. The handles are very comfortable for me.

Its been shown in several instances that SO diagonals quality varies greatly. And in my experience with them, the pivot joint gets sloppy with use. The grips are also very beefy which can be good or annoying, depending on the use.

I didnt look up the Williams you mentioned, but IIRC, their domestic line is ProAmerica.

PROTO J244G

(* see post #11 of this thread *)

Most likely those were made for Proto by Proamerica. (The vast majority of Proamerica's output is made for their private-label accounts. Only recently have they actively sought out the end user market.)

I did my best to pick the brain of the guy on the telephone, but private label contracts generally require the vendor to maintain confidentiality. I am, therefore, not able to state with 100% certainty that Proto outsources that model from Proamerica. I can only state it with 99.9% certainty. ;)

I was in same boat recently needing extra lond side cutters. I found a pair at Tractor Supply. It was their house brand. Made in China, but jaws lined up and looked, decent. $12.00. They did the job I needed.

The Pro America cutters above are the same ones that MAC and Proto sell and I have had mine for twenty plus years.

I bought a couple of their items and I can't see why they are considered seconds, either. But, it makes me believe Tekton really does have a decent QC policy. I also don't like to buy Chinesium but these long reach tools probably won't get used five times in what's left of my lifetime and it won't be for cutting quarter inch steel rod.

FWIW: I've really come to appreciate the input of the member I've quoted here. Thank you.

Tekton! I think I paid like $16 or $17 at Meijer for my Tekton long reach diagonals. This thing is a solid beast and cuts really well. No reason to spend an astronomical amount of money on tool truck pliers when Tekton can do the same job at probably 1/5 the price.
