I have LONG wanted to be be able to contribute and learn from this great resource, but we have been confined in many ways by space and the fact that we’ve moved a lot.
Well, after over 10 years of moving all over creation we finally settled on where home will be. After a year of getting settled, we finally will be closing on our forever home and property. And you all know what that means! Budget is far from unlimited, but I would like to figuratively and literally build a good foundation for modularity and future function. We’ve got a little over 5 acres to play with and a million desirements. In the immediate it will be to store vehicles, tools, and motorcycles.
I’m a very long time gear head and tinkerer with mild woodworking skills and general understanding of all things technical who is a bit of a geek career-wise. My wife is an equestrian, so we’ll have horses and such on the property in addition to all the motorized toys and the tools to accompany them.
My list of questions is absurdly long and detailed, but as an occupational hazard I’m a nut for establishing requirements and as the budget will not allow for an all inclusive once and done deal, I need to establish the high level space and other variables that will allow for future capabilities to be integrated without having dramatic reconstruction costs.
Our current house has a 5 car in suburbia hell, and it is filled to the gills with cars, tools, and motorcycles. I’m trying to avoid having to play Tetris in the building to be built and eventually will have a lift installed. We also have a 36’ diesel pusher that although we are most likely selling, I’d like at a minimum to be able to pull in to work ok. One of the cars is of course a project that will be a frame off restoration, so having the space to put parts, tub, chassis, etc for that effort would be great. The main house on the new property has a 2 car, but I’ve promised the boss that is all hers.
So then. My detailed question to those much more savvy than I in all this:
- Are there plans on line that can be purchased/viewed to further whet my appetite? I have to believe yes, but does anyone have some suggestions how to apply Google fu?
- Are there specific algorithms that can be applied to determine what size space I should look to build?
- Should I just find a local builder/architect/contractor and work with them to get some ideas?
- What other questions should I be asking?
Long term will be solar and all that stuff, but currently there will be sufficient juice. The horses will go in a separate barn, but most likely I’ll get a tractor that I’d like to keep in the shop.
